Volvo S40

    Hey, I am looking at the Volvo S40 at the moment and wondering if any one has any issues with them. I'm especially looking at a 2008 1.8L flexifuel as the flexifuel model seems to be the cheapest. Will I be able to run it on just petrol and if so would the mpg be better than worse that a normal petrol one.
    It's my first buying a new car so would appreciate all the help.

    The main differences between the Flexifuel and the petrol models are the service intervals (10k vs 20k miles).

    Other than that, the usual S40/V50 problems apply, such as faulty alternators and warning messages on the dashboard such as 'Anti-Skid Service'. The latter can be costly but Volvo Car Ireland are known to provide goodwill gestures in most cases, covering the repair cost.

    My experience of a Volvo s40 1.6 diesel has been very bad. Car bought new. No problems until I hit 50,000 miles. Then one thing after another.

    Had to get rid of it. Just too expensive to keep repairing it.

    1.6 Diesels are known to be hit and miss when it comes to reliabilty, with DMF's and DPF's etc.

    The 1.8 petrol is a different beast altogether though. The engine is a chain driven Ford Duratec and is relatively OK.

    The 1.6 petrol is a Ford engine and a pretty solid unit. As already mentioned check for warning messages on the dashboard and make sure all electrics work. Suspension components are also weak points on the S40.

    I have the 1.8 petrol model and have just replaced the alternator (88K kilometres) which was about €300 parts and labour.

    But the big one for me was the clutch slave cylinder, the car gave up on the side of the road and had to be towed to the nearest dealer. It's a really lousy engineering design which means about 8 hours labour and that's where the major cost lies.

    The early warning sign is the engine missing pausing for a brief moment as you accelerate up through the gears. Catch it early enough and it's grand. But if it fails, time to cancel the holiday fund :(

    However, otherwise the car has been excellent and has served me really well. I'll miss it very much next year when I trade it in for something bigger.

    Make sure you're getting a high spec model, SE Lux/Premium is the one to aim for.
