What is it about shoes? (Other items of clothing? Bags?)

I just love shoes. I don't have lots of different pairs of them, just a few. I'm too frugal to indulge, and too poor as well. :pac: If I had the money though, I think I'd be a little less strict with myself. I would have a few more pairs indeed. :)

I have friends who are this way about vintage dresses, handbags, hats, etc. But for me, it's definitely shoes. Not that other things don't catch my eye while out shopping, but it's the shoes that really grab my attention.

Is there any particular thing that you're fond of fashion-wise? I don't even like fashion, but for some reason, I can't resist shoes!

Nope. Absolutely nothing fashion-wise that I really love. Truth be told, I hate shopping. I'm steadily losing weight though so that could all change once I reach the size I want :) For now I hate shopping. I always feel dejected, ashamed and just generally shíte.

Stationery is my thing. Mmm pens and notepads <3

Love shoes myself too. I have never actually counted them, but I reckon I probably have about 100 pairs, possibly more, this is just heels not including flats. Most are not expensive, from dunnes, penneys, new look, other ones are non chain brand highstreet shops etc., I have a few from faith and scuh and more expensive shops but not many. I tend to buy some ones that I particularly like in more than one colour of the same shoe.

Also love handbags, couldn't even begin to count them. I've been collecting them since I was about 12 or 13.

I love shoes and handbags because I just love the huge variety of colours, patterns, shape, and little details like sequins, studs, sparkle, lace, bows, buckles. Each item is so pretty.

I love how you could be wearing a plain black dress, but could have an amazing red pair of killer heels that suddenly makes the outfit much more interesting. Or how you could be wearing very casual day to day clothes, but have an amazing striking handbag, that really stands out and is interesting to look at. I get comments on my bags and shoes a lot.

Aside from the high heels which I mentioned, I have a good few flat shoes aswell, pumps, converse, canvas shoes. They are in a variety of different colours and designs. I also have a few pairs of runners.

Sad thing is I only ever wear my heels if I'm going out for the night. I wear runners or some of the more boring plain flats waaaay too much!
I must start wearing them more in everyday outfits, otherwise it's pointless having them.
I always use my handbags though.

A friend of mine studying psychology told me before that lots of women love shoes because you are generally always the same size in them.
So whilst your weight and clothing sizes may fluctuate, you are usually always the same (usually small single digit size) in your shoes which is comforting.
I don't know how accurate her statement was, there might be something to it I guess ,but many people who are always the same size still love shoes, and others have no interest in them whatsoever.

I also love hair accessories like bows, clips, bands, and also scarves.
Cheap dress jewellery is another, very colourful unusual designs. Of course it always changes colour eventually!:pac:
I don't have as many of these things as I do shoes/handbags though.

I own more accessories than clothes. Don't know if that's a good or bad thing.

I prefer accessory shopping than clothes shopping myself. Hate trying stuff on.

Glad I'm not the only one who has a bit of a thing for stationary! My thing there is refil pads. I go to poundshops and buy hardback refil pads in a load of different colours. I never end up using them all, so do often give them away to friends if they run out. Love the pukka project pads, but they are very expensive imo for the amount of pages you get. I only have 2 of them.
I like buying colourful markers and colouring pencils too that I doodle with when bored, or else decorate my pages with. Just love the smell of clean paper, and the designs on the hardback front.:)

Ties and scarves, for me. Well, and shoes. I just like how they can make an outfit go from 'oh that's nice' to 'oooooohhhhhh!!!"

Like, you could be wearing dark jeans, a black plain shirt and a blazer. With pain shoes, it's like "thats ok. it's neat at least..." but with my silver pointed wingtips and a silver scarf it goes to something that bit different.

With ties, I like wearing them because you don't see girls THAT often in them, and I like how they divide my front, gives a focal point running down rather than across. Plus if you look in the slightly fancier places you can get incredible fabrics and designs in ties, really unusual.

I'm the same as you about shopping, but only for clothes for myself. I like shopping for shoes and handbags. And I love shopping for other people.

My mom is the same as you re: stationery, she loves it! We used to go to this specialty office supply store and look at all the pens. :pac: She always has the nicest pens, and will ask for fancy ones as gifts. :)

I could develop a serious thing for dresses too, I think - if I ever got the spare cash. :P

    g.

I think there's some truth in that coz that's part of the reason I love shoes especially heels. The other reason being I'm quite short so the heels add a bit of height :D I also love earrings and bracelets/bangles, mostly because I feel they're signature pieces and will make an outfit unique to my personal style.

Well your feet do get bigger after having a baby. Or most women's do. Mine did anyway. :P

I just love the look of them. I don't even want to wear all the ones I like, some of them are ludicrous! But so pretty. :)

    No, I hate shoe shopping
I have a few pairs but mostly I find a comfy pair and wear them to death then dread having to replace them for months

It's gotta be coats as well for me. I have so many! And hats, you'll rarely see me in the winter without a trusty hat!

I adore shoes as well, but don't have that many. It's one thing I'll always spend money on, so I have a few really good pairs that I love and wear all the time.

I think the size thing is true for shoes, they'll (usually) always fit no matter what! If I'm feeling down I usually like to buy nice underwear, makes me feel pretty and girly! Nothing expensive - Penneys/Dunnes/M&S. But it does the job for a quick fix!

I love shoes too! I've bought many cheaper and a few more expensive ones over the years. I love heels so most of my pairs are 3" +. The 2 pairs I ever remember getting the most compliments on were from TK Maxx and New Look so more expensive doesn't always mean prettier :)

Sooo Little Acorn, what shoe size are you and where do you live ... :D

I love shoes too and have quite a few pairs, I used to go for bright colours but since being permanently skint for the last while I tend to buy in neutral colours now so they go with more things.

The other thing I buy lots of are costume earings, I love them - dangly feathers, cute studs, buttons, bows, safety pins, all sorts. I have so many solo earings from losing one from a set but my sis taught me the magic of the side pony tail so now I can get away with wearing just one earing when having my hair like that, plus it looks cute :P

Makeup. Of any type, if it's colourful and shiny, it's mine. I may be part magpie.

Clothes are nice but I always see shopping as a chore, and though the payoff of a nice outfit is great, the process is crap (Never feel worse about myself than when those jeans just won't fit). I prefer online shopping most of the time for pretty dresses, as it's all feelgood: see pretty, click pretty, own pretty. The delivery and fitting is so disjointed from the purchase that it's win-win at the time until it doesnt fit...

Shoes too are great in concept but in practice I'm a size 8 and most shoes just won't look dainty and cute on my clodhoppers. I'd love to be a size 5 feet and skip about the place in high heels, but I'm also relatively tall so high heels put me towering above most others, which I don't like.

So makeup wins. It always fits, it's pretty and they are always making new stuff to play with. ;) And thanks to a certain nail polish thread I've become a loon about that too!

I'd love to have a 'thing' about clothes but I just can't afford to!
For me I guess it is more about patterns, especially on notebooks or journals..I adore prints on fabric like little ponies,or hearts of teacups, or stars, whatever, basically anything with little patterns, I want.

I find nothing so soul destroying as jeans shopping. I hate it, i normally come home with nothing and spend the evening halfway between furious and depressed. Ugh. Hence all my jeans have an extremely lived-in look, I wear them until they literally fall apart. /ends rant.

In repsonse to the op, with me it's handbags. I love them. Don't own any that are especially expensive as I like to chop and change them with my outfit. before handbags it was scarves, and i do have a stationary thing i try to keep under control. i have many, many beautiful notebooks lying around the house, but I dont want to write in them because it'll ruin them somehow.

it's jewellery for me. I absolutely adore it and I think the right piece can bring an outfit from bland to fabulous.

I mostly go for gold or silver stuff and am lucky that I inherited a nice few pieces, but I have some lovely costume jewellery too.

nothing tacky or bling-bling though, shudder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 327 ✭✭Daisy03

Bags, purses and scarves are my favourites. They are not that expensive mainly Dunnes, Pennys, New Look, Accessorize etc. but I have the odd splurge in DKNY.

I hate trying on clothes so I think thats why I like them. I can scope a shop out in 2 mins flat. I know if I like something or not. I do not browse and hate shopping with friends as I don't understand how someone can spend half an hour in a shop!

I can take or leave shoes. I seem to be between sizes so the shoe will fit my right perfectly but be a bit too tight on my left foot. It kills me when I find a perfect pair and one doesnt fit!

I absolutely hate hate hate shopping for clothes, but I adore shoes and boots- must have heels!!!
I have to wear sensible flats for work,or I'd probably break an ankle or worse, so when work is over........heels.
I have over 6 pairs of boots, and feel so feminine and sexy when I wear them.Come to think of it,it was my half birthday last week so I'm due a treat.
Sometimes it's so fantastic to be a woman:D

Shoes do not do it for me. I am small, I'm ok with that, if I wear high heels they hurt me and I morph into a narky firebreathing dragon who minces along with geisha-girl steps.

Stationary, I love it. I'm a hoarder of fancy diaries and pens, I was given this cool fountain pen once and nearly had an orgasm.

Makeup but only the MAC makeup counter, I would spend hours in MAC. It is my happy place.

Books, Chapters bookstore is another happy place of mine.

Penneys tho is the ultimate Narnia, if I ever feel like a cheapo pick me up thrill I wander through the doors of this fairy grotto and can usually soothe my woes wandering through the aisles.

I hate shopping, whenever I have money it seems theres nothing out there that catches my eye, its the day yer broke though that it's all out there though isnt it!

So I will go out with good intentions at buying clothes and I will wander into HMV and happily spend hours in there, or Hodges and Figgis! and blow my clothes funds in there! Seriously I fail at being a girl :o

I also love the idea of penneys and I can't believe some of the finds my friends have got in there but I just have NO patience for the place!

Love the Benefit and MAC counters but only recently have been able to afford my taste! Oh and I have been known to drop stupid amounts of money in Boots aswell :o

I also LOVE pens! Theres a certain type of pen that I like to write with but I think it has largely been discontinued :/ speaking of, I feel a trip to reads is in order...

Cardigans and scarves. At last count I had something like 37 scarves and 15 cardigans. None of them are in the least bit expensive though. There is one beautiful black beaded number from Monsoon that I got on sale that I barely wear because I'm terrified of it bobbling. But there's something about wearing a cardigan and scarf with whatever - dress, skirt, trousers - that makes me feel together and confident.
If I had to pick one though, I'd pick scarves. I have some lovely ones from all over, India, Paris, London, Australia....Penneys :pac:
None of them were expensive, but they all have a memory attached to them, and as I'm quite chesty and very conscious of being modest in certain situations, it relieves me no end to know I could stick on the scarf if necessary.

Actually, I was moaning to my OH's aunt about having to give up some of my precious scarves to charity because they were taking up too much space, and she's offered to help me put cotton backs onto them and turn them into a quilt! That sounds like a great idea, I can't wait to get started :)

I've always been frugal and slow to spend money on myself, but in the last couple of years I have the disposable cash and the encouragement (from boyfriend :D) to do so.

I have started only recently to appreciate how fabulous high-end or designer shoes are! I only have a few pairs but I can see a collection building...

That's exactly my problem. I've to hold myself back from going into bookshops if I need some new clothes (note the word NEED) because I'll blow the budget. I'm not into handbags or shoes either.

I've a lot of admiration for girls/ fellas who have a great sense of style, but it's a huge effort for me to go shopping - I get bored after about an hour and want to go home/ to the pub - and I find myself just buying the same type of clothes over and over.

    I'm a girly fail too.
    :o

It used to be shoes. I had about 200 pairs at one stage. Most of them were decent branded shoes, I can't wear Penneys or Dunnes shoes. I think I had something like 12 pairs of black knee high boots all lined up, 2 pairs the same, 1 for work, 1 for "good wear", the rest all various heel heights or toes. And I had 2 pairs of brown boots the same for the work/"good" wear as well.

I have a few pairs of shoes I have never worn, still with labels on. I have about 50 pairs of summer sandals that go with various different outfits. I really like coloured sandals in the summer, I think I've every colour under the rainbow.

For the past few years it's been handbags. Mostly all leather, although some canvas ones. I have about 10 designer bags, all kept in their dust bags, my favourite brand of bags is Kate Spade, www.katespade.com really preppy styles, and lovely bright colours. I'm not into that Louis Vuitton logo look at all, most of my bags to look at you wouldn't see a label screaming off them but they're really well made, lovely finishing touches and really nice lining:o.

I'm starting to collect scarves now though, my favourite ones are a couple of beautifully printed wool pashminas that I picked up in a turkish market a few years ago. I also got really nice ones in tesco this year, and a few in penneys too.

I'm a bit of a horder when it comes to clothes as well. Working in fashion retail for 14 years didn't help:o

I love handbags but can never afford the ones I like (expensive taste is a curse). My mom taught me to sew at a young age and when I was growing up we'd go into Brown Thomas and the likes, I'd memorise the bags we liked and then we'd go for lunch and I'd draw out the designs and we'd make them together :D it was great fun, shame we couldn't do the same for shoes though

I adore coats too- especially vintage stuff. I have my aunts long suede jacket from the 60's and I love buying old leather jackets :)

Shoes for me too, I don't care if i'm wearing a black sack as long as I love my shoes and it's always the first thing I check out in other girls outfits. And shoe shopping is so much easier than clothes shopping. I'm a size four so can always buy end of line shoes for dirt cheap so always come home happy, clothes shopping I come home pissed off and feeling fat.

Seems I'd be in a minority. I'm not in to any fashiony stuff. If shoes are comfortable I'll buy them and wear them until they wear out. If a bag holds my stuff and is comfortable to carry then that's fine too. Clothes would be the same. I've never really understood the appeal of any of this.

I'm more in to books, CDs, DVDs.

Yeah, I had a little seal with my initials on it, and wax - you know, for sealing the back of an envelope and stamping it with your initials!
    This kinda thing

I have so many weaknesses: shoes, bags, make up, nail polish, clothes, homeware, candles, thread and beads and fabric for my sewing machine...

I'm also a big pen fiend. I lived in Japan for a short time and I brought home so many pretty pens and paper and journals :sigh:

I love buying things for others moreso than myself. Finding the perfect gift, then choosing the card and the wrapping paper or maybe a gift bag, adding ribbons... :P

I have so many weaknesses: shoes, bags, make up, nail polish, clothes, homeware, candles, thread and beads and fabric for my sewing machine...

Sounds like my sister. Her presents usually look too pretty to want to open, something like this: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_y82gLDKwc0k/SU8XiDC0ybI/AAAAAAAAALQ/oM4PBah6nTk/s400/wrap.jpg
    or this: http://us.123rf.com/400wm/400/400/ca2hill/ca2hill1101/ca2hill110100004/8627089-a-beautifully-wrapped-christmas-present-featuring-pink-paper-stars-and-ribbon.jpg,

whereas mine look more like this: http://irishrantings.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/badly-wrapped-gift.jpg or this: http://www.jandjacres.com/Images/Blog/2009-12December/WrappedPresent1.JPG :o

    Pretty gift bags ftw!

Yep, I'm truly a failure as a girl...

I own one pair of: brown heels & black heels (for work), black half-boots & brown half-boots (work/casual), black knee-high boots (work/casual) and a few casual slip on shoes/runners (all brown).

I wear something until is has holes I can't fix or until it doesn't fit anymore...this means I still have clothes from over 10 years ago.

I don't understand (or care to understand) style & fashion. I wear what's clean & comfortable. Maybe I should care a bit more, but money's tight & I have so many other priorities....my wardrobe just isn't one of them.

I do have a weakness for cookbooks though. :p

I think I just have a spending problem in general :D Above all else, I love gadgets and will happily buy them before clothes or shoes which earns me a lot of slagging from friends/family members. Cameras, lenses, accessories, stylish cases and bags (oh maybe I do have a bit of fashion sense after all)... apple products, and anything else I can use to pimp out the aforementioned gadgets such as extra RAM or external storage space. I embrace digital content in all it's forms, I probably keep the iTunes store in business singlehandedly with the amount of music, movies and apps I buy (and since I got an iPad... magazines too!) I really can't wait to get a Kindle :)

I had to ban myself from buying stationary I just admire and never use, and I do love cookbooks and any cooking supplies. If it combines gadgetry and cooking/baking, even better! I've a tendency to buy a tonne of books in one go when the mood hits. There's something very comforting about having a stack of unread books nearby to choose from.

Shoes wise, it would probably be Converse. I can't resist buying new colours and styles when they come out. I like buying shoes because I'm never too bloated or having too much of a fat day to wear them, but heels are wasted on me as I can't walk in the effing things.

And I LOVE hoarding makeup, especially lip glosses and nail varnish!

I go for certain features rather than different categories of items.

    I love :):

    • boatneck
    • maxi
    • mini
    • monochrome
    • navy
    • nautical
    • starry (as in with a star print)
    • drapey
    • airy (kaftan-like)
    • slightly edgy or rock-star vibe inducing (studs, spikes, washed out denim, black, black, black)
    • shiny, high boots
    • platform shoes

    I detest (euw, euw :():

    • buttons
    • kitten-heels
    • flares
    • bland, respectable hem; either fall-to-the-floor maxi or a little mini say so much more

Am a serious hoarder, on top of it all. But once I get a hang of e-bay, watch me go!!! :pac: That's my New (school) Year resolution this year: a good (e-bay) clearout.
