im with Upc a few years on a 20mb connection ..i get 2-2.5mb download and 200kbs maximum upload .........i assumed that you get a 10th of the connection speed for your download and a 10th of the download speed for your upload....but apparently i should be downloading at 20mb and uploading at 2.5 ..........i have no idea whats wrong and i need to get an ethernet cable (dog chews them up all the time) so UPC can test it ......i was hoping someone here could just help me....please and thanks

P.S..........hope this is the correct section

Go to speedtest.net and post your results back here.

How are you connected to your modem?

I have 100meg UPC and I get 105meg download and 6 meg upload... wired connection though... wireless will never achieve the best results and this is no fault of UPC's.

As UPC have suggested plug straight into your modem / router and run speedtest there and see what the results are.

There is a specific broadband forum (you'll probably get this thread moved there).

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=259

I'm on the 25 meg line and getting down speeds of just over 20megs and that's running a speedtest wirelessly!

You're better off doing as other posters suggested, plugging directly in to the modem and running a speedtest.

well yeah speedtest shows up close to what i should get

but with download programs or browser downloads i only get a 10th of that

Then the fault lies with the sites you are downloading from. There wont be anything UPC can do for you there.

no...but this is with various different sites/programs..........basically anything that downloads and shows the speed

So start this download of ubuntu and see what speed you get:

Are you sure your downloads aren't showing in Bytes? 2.5mB (byte) download is about 20mb (bit) download, which is what you're paying for. Look out for uppercase B.

1024kBs is about 8mb's. Not your full 20 but about average speed as to what a lot of websites will let you download.

Your speed test is 17mb which is good. As someone said try the Ubuntu download, that should be pretty fast. Honestly it sounds like your connection is fine.

ok thanks guys............ill probably upgrade to the 100mb UPC during the week..so should get 5 times what i have now...and hopefully a better ping and latency

Ping wont change... if you want to improve your ping you need to have a wired connection on a decent router.

i only have the standard CISCO router ......could you suggest a router that would improve my ping/latency ...or maybe give me a link to a page showing me what id be looking for in a router (mainly for xbox live)

Being honest the single biggest thing you can do to improve is to wire the connection.

If wireless is your only option then look at getting something like this:
    http://komplett.ie/Komplett/product/ZKB_04RAND/18_NETWORK/14_ROUTER/productdetails/20067061/Linksys_E3000_High_Performance_Wireless_N_Router_/E3000_EW/default.aspx

However if you change to 100meg UPC will install a new modem so you would be aswell try that and see how you fair first.

i usually am wired...as its not wireless....but if i have 2 360,s on it makes my NAT appear strict so i hook it up to the laptop for wireless
