I have a HTC Desire which I like, but I have to replace it (long story).

The main thing that bugs me about the Desire is the battery life, so that would be the main thing I'm looking to improve upon.

Also, the Desire is quite a new phone, so I imagine things haven't advanced much since its release?

    Any suggestions?

Advances haven't been huge, and are really only in the high end.

Dual core processors up to 1.2GHz
    up to 1GB RAM
    Phones thinner, screens larger
Camera improved in HTCs over the Desire
    Android 2.3.4

Main players in Ireland are Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Sensation

Alternatives LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix

3D Phones: HTC EVO 3D and LG Optimus 3D

Sony Xperia Arc is SE's best offering.

I went with SGSII, despite not liking the original SGS, and am very pleased

    The SGSII looks very nice

    Dual Core Processor 1.2GB
    8MP camera
    1 GB RAM

Camera on the HTC Desire wasn't great. It doesn't look like there's been a major improvemen tin battery life though.

Is there anything really big on the horizon? Typically I'm scared that when I buy one it will be trumped by some beast in a matter of weeks or months. I know this is the reality of phone technology but just as long as nothing really good is just about to come out.

    Yeah it's nice

I get a day out of the battery with moderate-heavy use.

In fairness the Sensation's camera is supposed to be a big step forward

With regard to becoming outdated, that will always happen eventually, but I think that these phones will be the best phones of the year, and I'd say that it will be early next year before there is anything that truly betters these.

Here is some rumors about upcoming HTC Vigor, but don't worry, you won't see this with any of our carriers anytime soon

Yeah, that's not around the corner anyway! :D

Might just get the SG II sim free, I have access to Wi-Fi almost always and the price plans on O2 and vodafone are pretty pricey, can't see the meteor ones because they're out of stock!
