A friend of mine told the weirdest story about Freemasons.

She was on her way home and noticed a stone in her shoe, so she stopped at the nearest set of steps to take it out. While she was sitting on the steps, the door behind her opened, and a guy came out and invited her in. She said she was fine and explained why she had stopped, but the guy, again, said that she should come in, and that he could give her a drink of water.

She said no, again, and turned away and she heard the door close. When she got up, the guy was gone, but there was a Teddy bear sitting on the step beside the door.

Turns out the place is a Freemason base.

    Weird.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think they allow female members. So it wasn't to get her to join up.

I dont think you ask to join OP. They usally invite you.

Most things like that are invite only, or you need at least a sponsor. Even the Ancient Order of Hibernians is afaik.

    That rules me out then...

There is a popular misconception that to become a Mason one needs to be invited to join, that there is some cloak and dagger operation involved. In fact the reverse is true - a longstanding convention within Freemasonry is that it is the potential candidate who should do the asking! If you know a friend or neighbour who is a Mason and you have a notion of joining just ask him. He will be delighted to talk with you as all Masons are proud to be members of their own Lodge.

    Atheism and Freemasonry are incompatible!

Wonder what they would think of someone who believes in a God/Creator...just thinks that all the established religions are about as likely to be as incorrect as each other?

I think that once you believe in some flavour of vague grand architect then they don't care too much when it comes to your religion or lack thereof.

Is belief in Kevin McCloud sufficient?

Perhaps they could do with a web designer in their ranks, because their site looks like it was designed about two years after the Freemasons began.

    OH SNAP!

I agree, those at the top in Molesworth Street wouldnt exactly be au fait with Social Media, the Web etc....which is why most locallodges have their own sites.

Do the Masons engage in any sort of reconditioning of the mind or soul, with a view to enlightenment?

    1. Contact Grand Lodge and request to join

    2. They will reply back with a list of lodges in your area

    3. A member of your nearest lodge will contact you and have a phone conversation with a view to arrange to meet you in person

    4. A meeting will take place whereby a couble of fellas will have a chat to see are you taking the mick, or are you actually interested in joining.

    5. They will propose you and second you, and then a vote will be cast, if there are no black balls present, ie, if there are no objections, then you are in!! Simples!!;)

    At least you are honest.

It's against the rules you agreed to when you signed up. :)
