Comparing Costs

    Hi all.

Im considering getting an e90 318i, 320i soon after i sell my e46.

however, there is something that ive been meaning to ask:

a diesel is a bit of a no no i think, im only doing about 10 miles to and 10 miles from work daily with some odd long journeys, which would not make it worthwhile for me.

currently in the e46, im getting about 34mpg, and would get about 350miles per tank with a combination of city driving and back-roads-to-get-to-work driving.

ive been looking around, and saw a couple of 325i's that were in my price range. why im considering them is they are fully loaded spec wise and i do like to have a fully loaded car :)

what im worried about is, is the running cost of a 325i compared to a 318i and 320i.

apart from the insurance, which will probably be higher, i know the tax will be 1293 compared to 600ish for the 2 lower engined cars.

im wondering in terms of petrol use, what would i be looking at. ideally someone who has that 325 may be able to help in terms of consumption?

    Thanks again

AFAIK the 318 and 320i are both four cylinder engines in the E90... It depends probably on what gearbox you want, for example a manual 325i will probably do the same mpg as a 318/320i auto. Around the mid 30's I'd say...

The tax might be higher in the 325 but it is such a nicer engine than the four cylinders. 325i is a peach!

If you are doing low mileage then running costs when you take motor tax out of the equation, will not huge between a 325i and a 318i/320i. E90 325i are rare over here though and most would be better speced than the higher number of 318i/320i around.

Just avoid the 318i/320i from late 2007 that have Efficent Dynamics, those engines are troublesome.

thanks for that. things are pointing towards a 325i coming into the picture. i like that.

no post 2007 for me. im only going for 2005-2006 because of my budget.

now, donedeal, driving.ie and adverts, here i come! (well, when i sell the e46 that is).

Low mileage example here but a bit pricey:

Cheaper one here but doesn't look as tidy. They could have at least washed it for the photos:

And cheaper again to reflect the mileage but decent spec and a bit of tax left on it:
