It just shows how dead our "national" sport has become, either way Hurling is dying and is down to few derbys between the same few counties every year.

Since 1999 three countys have won the All-Ireland final, Cork, Tipperary and Kilkenny, out of 8 teams who got the opportunity to play in the final. The entire system favours the status quo, Kilkenny and Tipperary should have been made to play in the semi-final to try and break the monopoly they hold and try and make the sport into some resemblance of a competition.

In football since 1999 6 countys have won the All-Ireland, Cork, Kerry, Galway, Tyrone, Armagh and Meath out of 8 different finalists also. All four provinces won titles and regularly send finalists to the finals. Every club the lenght and breath of Ireland plays gaelic football and most county try to foster both codes however Hurling is dying and Kilkenny have done more damage to the sport in the last decade than has been seen for generations.

Kids getting into GAA will play football or else go off playing soccer or rugby, they will not entertain hurling unless they are in the big counties where they know they might have a chance of ever winning something. Example in Kilkenny where they refuse to play football and their greed to dominate the sport has effectively killed it off, I predict within another 30 years that the Kilkenny County Final will be the "All-Ireland" and it will survive as some sort ancient sport played in the county who killed the sport off for everyone else.

Every county enters a team in the football bar Kilkenny, there is always under dog success in football as it is our national sport and the weak countys can't even enter the Hurling anymore. People don't really care about the sport anymore because of what Kilkenny have been allowed to do to the sport.

    RIP "Our National Game"

I await our true national game next weekend where underdogs Mayo have the best chance of beating my own county in decades and it will draw more of a crowd to Dublin than todays game despite Dublin playing in their home city.

What Dublin have demonstrated today is that any county worth its salt can offer a competitive hurling team, with a ground up approach. While Galway have had a poor season, they have annually been a fly in the ointment for the big boys. Waterford remain competitive, in spite of their large loss this season. Cork hurling is in a lull, but will return with a vengance at some point.

Plus your rant about Kilkenny is ill-informed. Tipperary and Cork have had the beating of them on 4 final occasions over the last decade.

I assume you are just sour because Kerry would hardly figure in any language in the top tier of hurling.

Never heard so much Sh1T in one post, someone obviously has a gripe against Hurling!

Think Dublin just proved today how to improve as a hurling county. From the ground up.They've been working on this for years now and its starting to pay off. They are going to be a serious contender for years to come. And the crowds will also improve.Tipp did this years ago but it takes at least 5 years to filter through to senior success.Well done to Dublin today, that was some test for tipp.
Hard to know who will win the AI.My worry as a tipp supporter is the blocking and fielding that was a huge part of last years win was missing for big parts of todays and this years performances. We have loads to work on and it was good that we were pushed so hard.It was better than having another rout, then facing a kilkenny team with vengence on their minds.
Well done dublin,as corbett said that was a real dogfight!

This will be a very interesting AI Final as Kilkenny are in with vengence and Tipp being pushed hard by a improved Dublin side so I predict a Kilkenny win as they are hungry for revenge.

Im a Mayo man and would LOVE IT if we toppled our old foes Kerry next weekend however I dont agree with your post as Dublin showed today that they will be right up there with Kilkenny and Tipp for years to come. Ya only have to look at the progress their Minors and U21 and the step up they have made.. super display by the Dubs

You didn't see an impressive performance from an injury riddled Dublin team today then I take it ?

Hurling is alive and well among the counties that play it.

Come back to us or open a new thread when you know what you're talking about.

Meanwhile - enjoy the football, but don't try pitching the two codes against one another. They are both very different games and comparing them in the snide manner you attempted is tantamount to useless trolling.

That post earlire is a load of rubbish tbh. The Kilkenny team of the past few years is arguably the greatest team ever and it's great teams that teams are raising their standard to match them. Plus with Dublin, Clare, Limerick, Galway all having good underage teams coming through, there's great hope for the future.

As for the final...it has the potential to be one of the best ever. Both teams are very very good...they are the 2 best around and hopefully it will live up to expectations.

This is truly the most IGNORANT statement I've read in a very long time. I heard something similar on Des Cahill's old phone-in show on radio a few years ago after a Kilkenny-Wexford Leinster Final. Some idiot (certainly not from Wexford) rang in claiming to be outraged at Kilkenny's behaviour in winning by so much. Kilkenny led by 10 points after less than 10 minutes and went on to win by 15 or 16 points. He claimed that Kilkenny should have been forced to take off Henry Shefflin and a couple of others when it was obviously that they were so superior. They would then be allowed to bring them back on again for the last 10 minutes if the outcome was still in doubt. Amazingly, Des let him have his say and didn't even point out how ridiculous his point was.

Do you understand the basics of competitive sport? It is every individual or teams responsibilty to be the best they can be. If one team is the best by a long way, it is not up to them to ease off or weaken in any way just to make a competition more closely fought. It is up to the other teams to rise up to this standard just as Tipp have done. Dublin are also getting there rapidly.

    complete bollox!

you know for a fact that every team in ireland plays football?? wrong! my own club at adult level play football more as a novelty than a competitive sport. it coincides with the hurling championship too much and cant afford to have lads getting injured.
we have won county titles at underage level but it wanes the older the players get.

as for your stat on hurling winners versus football winners, 3 from 8 is a better percentage than 6 from 34!

hurling is far from dead, yes its only a few teams who are winning it, but its still a better game than football, especially the way football is played these days.

in the next 30 years dublin should be winning the minor and 21 championships year in year out with the odd exception from other counties.
this will then feed onto senior, but it wont be quite as severe at that level as it will be more competitive.

the work been done around the country by all the hurling development officers should bear fruiting in the next 10 or 15 years and hurling should improve in the weaker counties!

Threads been derailed a bit by the usual suspect but back on topic i think we'll see nothing in it again this year.

I'll go for Kilkenny because i suspect they've a few more ball winners where it matters. Both sides have improvement in them and both sides carry a huge goal threat. May come down to who wants it more in the last 5 minutes.

Lads in fairness, the second post on the thread is way off the thread topic. This is a discussion/ predictions thread for the all ireland hurling final.

Our true national sport was an after-thought of the people who founded the organisation?

As for the final, this is the closest the teams have been, none played great semi final matches so is all for the taking.

    Tis why I reported it.

Teams needed to come to Kilkennys level, Tipp have, it appears Dublin are next to do it...if thats bad then we may as well give up on success.

This should go in the book of 'what not to say in a thread of a big game'.

We're gonna start afresh in a new thread which me or one of the mods will form either tonight or tomorrow, with some ground-rules laid out at the start as it's obviously gonna generate a lot of interest. Stuff like the first 20 posts here is exactly what we want to avoid for this one.
