What's the best way to destroy a hard drive without being able to format it?

I've got three old IDE hard drives that I'm going to dump, only problem is that I don't have any motherboards around anymore that have IDE connectors. I can't connect them to anything to format them, so what's the best way to make them useless/secure?

Someone told me to throw them into a bucket of water, but I'm not too convinced about that.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Dismantle it!? Break it apart like you would a cd. Crush it and throw it away. No one should have access to what's on the drive, only way to do that is to dismantle the hard drive.

Dismantle it, and scatter the pieces around multiple bins.

When you get to the platters, drill some holes in them or cut them in 4 pieces, and throw 3 of them away, and send the final bit to your cousin in australia(or keep it, or throw it into the sea).

you should have taken them apart, there are some very strong rare earth magnets inside that are fun to play with.
