The third running of the Connemara 100 got underway this morning at 6am.

Fifteen participants headed off into the gloom and damp of the Connemara wilderness. We wish them luck and hopefully see them all back in the next 30 hours or so.

Is this a lap race or a straight 100 miler???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

It's a bg figure of eight course. you run the connemara utra in reverse for one of the "o"'s of the 8 and the other goes west via roundstone. beautiful scenery.

Thanks for all the good vibes. This race is just getting better and better. Will do a full report at some stage, but just wanted to recognise all of the nice vibes from here and from everyone else who's been in touch. It's a mind blowing experience, one you'd never forget. Heard some rumours about plans to enlarge, enhance and improve the whole experience for next year.

If you're ever really, really wanted to see what you look like in the mirror, when the sh!t has hit fan at 100 mph, this race gives you the chance to take in that view.

To all of the rest of the field - you have my deepest respect,

    Mick.

Wow, great photos! I love the ones of everybody reading the booklets, such intensity. I have to say I am always impressed on the quality of the smiles, I really think you get the biggest grins from people on long runs. I guess they are having a ball.

Curious how he has a lot of DNFs for someone with his professional knowledge.

This race twice and 3 Ironmans DNFs, all tough events and well done for trying them but you have to wonder a bit..

So what happens if you're over the 30hrs?

Do they remove you from the course? or you go on but get recorded as a DNF?

It's up to the race director.

However, they cannot remove you from the course if you don't want to (though after 30 hours I'd definitely welcome being removed, I think).

Less of the clown talk. Well done on the race. I wasn't having a go merely highlighting there is probably something wrong with his approach to some of the races he has attempted. Best of luck to him in future races and hope he is well.

Sounds like a great race and something I'd like to try some day.

He sets himself very lofty goals and it does not pan out for him.

Less of that. Puts himself out there publicly - people are only having a laugh. He's put himself in the public eye and opened himself up to ridicule. Chill out.

    Can't stand the bloke myself.

Do you even know him, have you ever even met him? Your talking **** about the fella and i doubt you do. Last time i saw him he was in bits after having to drop out. Keyboard warriors on here some people

Yeah, cos no one ever comments on people in the public eye about whether they like them or not, right?

You're getting aggressive and you're calling everyone else keyboard warriors...

My definition of a keyboard warrior is somebody that would say nothing to the fella if they met him and roast him online. I've net the guy a few times and ran with him for a few hours the other day and he seems like a nice fella.

I don't think you have to wonder at all. Karl had, from what I can gather talking to him last weekend, every bit of preparation done, he had a top class crew including a medic and what seemed like a sensible strategy. I cycled alongside him for a while at about mile 10 and he was in great form, looking very strong and gave me no hint that he would DNF. When I caught up with him at mile 25 he was in exactly the same state, joking with me, trying to convince me to do Conn Ultra next year etc. But what we are talking about here is a 100 mile race, 4 marathons back to back, over a tough course (nearly 3000ft total elevation gain) in what ended up being ****ty conditions with the headwind on the first 30-40 miles. However much preparation you do, however much professional knowledge you have, adverse weather conditions are going to affect your game. I don't think we should judge the man that he DNF'd, we should judge the man that he had the balls to stand on all the respective start lines with the conviction that on that day he was ready to do battle.
