As the thread title suggests, sometimes I have exactly 35 minutes to spend exercising (can be in the gym). Would i be better going for a jog rather than the gym?

Any good ideas for getting as much done as possible, don't want to be wasting any time!

Just for background, the routine I have got from the gym trainer is do 7 machines at the gym, 3 legs and 4 upper body, and then 15-20 mins cardio.

What do you hope to achieve? A change in shape, better cardio fitness? A run will burn calories and work your heart and lungs. Its good exercise but won't give you muscle or 'tone you up'. For a short burst I would do free weights. Never too keen on gym machines myself.

Thanks - am just trying to lose a bit of weight but also to improve my fitness levels overall.

I suppose I was just wondering if it was best to just do one thing when you have a shorter amount of time, or are you better to try mix it up? For instance today I had 35 mins and I did 3 leg machines then the rest on the treadmill, but perhaps I'd be better off focusing on one thing?

Just curious about your opinion too on the machines, I'm only a member of a gym a short while so don't know what sort of results they provide. Are they really no use?

You can fit alot into 35mins.

What you're doing at the moment isn't going to have much of an effect. You could try something fairly simple like this:

15min block (as many rounds as you can)
    Squat x 10
    Press Ups x 10
    DB Rows x 10

    - if you haven't squatted before then you could do 10 unweighted squats to start with; if you know how to squat then you could do a Kettlebell squat and reduce the reps to 5. DB Rows aren't very difficult to master, just ask someone in the gym to show you.

If you really want to run then you could follow that with a 10min interval block on the treadmill, so say 1min on/1 min off - run as fast as you can for 60secs, then jog 60secs and repeat for 10mins. You should be gassed by the end of it. If it's too difficult, make the rest time longer.

You said you have 35mins, so you could do a running block, work block, running block.

If you want more ideas for workblocks check myself or Gymfreaks log, there are plenty there to choose from :)

You can get so much done in 35mins

There are a series of videos i have done that outline workouts/metcons that can be done in very limited time however you should get the basic movements checked by a trainer to make sure you are doing them right or to point out any faults e.g. knee dropping in on your squats, lunges, over squatting your kettlebell swing, break in midline on plank position etc

here are three (there are over 20 to pick from) and keep in mind that all workouts are scalable so long as you are screened to check you can perform the movements well -

    Lunges and burpees -

Skipping and KB swing ladder (she is 46yrs young) -

Run, dip, squat, sit up and burpee metcon (do press ups, a push press overhead or bench dips instead of the ring dips) -

Hope that helps and 35mins is lots of time to get in some foam rolling and stretching also

Check out if your gym have Kettlebell classes or if there are classes close to where you live/work and take a couple of classes to get shown the proper technique.

Then you can continue to take the classes or you could pick up a couple of KB's for home and for ideas on routines have a look at Marianne's blog. KB workouts don't need that much space and you can mix it up with body weight exerciese also.

Also don't neglect your diet as this will play the biggest part in your weight loss goal.
