Strange problem with speedometer needle

I have a 2002 Toyota Corolla and the needle on the speedometer is stuck.

There is a little black plastic pin that sticks out in line with zero (I think the purpose of the pin is to stop the needle at zero when the engine is off) and the needle has somehow gone behind the pin

This means that the speedometer is stuck at zero whne the engine is on and drops below zero when it is off. The pin sticks out quite a bit and I can't see how the needle "jumped" over the pin so I'm at a loss to understand how this happens.

Does anyone have an idea what caused this?

    Thanks.....

Did you go so fast the needle went all the way round?:)

Its fairly simple to fix, take the cluster out, normally a few screws and maybe clips (google for instructions relevant to car), once the cluster is out the glass at the front is only held in in a couple of places. The needle can then be moved by hand past the plastic "stop".
