Septic Tanks Question - Installation of New Septic Tank

I live in a rural area on a reasonably large site -my house is on the site about 50 years. Having some hassle with the septic tank - have had to have it cleaned out 3 times this year so far. The septic tank was installed in the early 80s.

Anyone got advice on the process of changing/upgrading the septic tank?

Would an "out with the old" and in with a new one be possible? What regulations/planning permission do I need?

I understand prices/costs are not discussed here - but would be hoping not to have to spend mega mega bucks.

    Thanks.

First of all it is important to find out what is wrong with your current system. If it was put in in the 1980's and if it was done correctly, it should be a septic tank and percolation area, this should be checked out by a site assessor, your LA should have an approved list.

If the problem is with your Percolation Area (providing you have one and not just a soakaway) it may be just a case of providing a new, or reserve, percolation area and you could be good to go again. If your tank is after failing and needs to be replaced then it may need to be replaced with a treatment system.

A costing for a percolation area (of say trench length 72m) would be €600 - €900. Treatment systems start at around €2,500 and go up from there.
