Picking up infections at clubs

Has any one ever picked up an infection or skin condition while training in a club?

Esp in terms of bjj and wrestling.

What do you guys do to try prevent catching something?

    Heres my story:

I once trained in a club in Cork for 1 week and managed to pick up ring worm.

It was my first time ever getting something like that and I have been training bjj for years in my own club.

I was very surprised at the Club, i never thought i would pick something up.

But afterwards having spoken to other guys from the boxing clinic cork apparently its not uncommon.

    Ring worm, Cellulitis..

I was ill with ring worm for about 2 weeks and couldnt train.

Just because you disguise a dig in a question doesn't mean that we won't cop that its a direct dig.

If you were really genuine about the question then you could have asked without naming the club in question.... by naming them straight off and especially after already having a dig at them in another thread, this stinks of a competing club trying to sling **** or disgruntled ex employee/ club member.

Yes, and you asked a question followed by 'your story', if it was a genuine question then there was no need to add 'your story' unless someone asks.

    Hey bjjwizard

I'm not gonna reveal your name, but it's known who you are - i know for a fact that you trained up there for a lot more than 1 week, and that you're now training in another gym in competition with the boxing clinic.

At least be honest about your motives eh!!!!

I edited out the name of club in the OP's post, its an important question but don't use it as a weapon against any clubs.

In all our time we have had 1 case of Ringworm, caught immediately and fighter had to stop training in club till it was gone and got medical attention, no 1 else got it,

People need to think hygeine, cut your nails, clean your kit, dont train in same kit without cleaning it 1st as bacteria breathes fast on sweaty clothes, cover up all cuts and scrapes etc and clean your self before and after training, people always go to walk into the toilets in the bare feet then onto the mats (that is madness) your essentially walking piss into the mats.

That is a small piece on it but if everyone follows these guidelines these infections will be very rare, and obviously gyms need to keep there gyms clean-i bought 1 of them steam mops and steam the mops out of it regular and there a great job and dry quick.

Hope that helps and lets not make this personal at all

Anyone care to add to that is welcome as its a very important subject..

Just to add to Cowzerp's post, this is a list of tips that we have up around our gym:

"Good practices to avoid Staph infections
Wash your BELT! Too many people wash their GI's and forget their belt. Dragging bacteria back to the mats every day

Shower as soon as possible after EVERY training session - scrub well

Keep cuts and abrasions clean and covered with a proper dressing (e.g., bandage) until healed.

Immediately disinfect any cuts or scrapes after class

Tape and protect pre-existing cuts/scrapes before going to class

Do not store your sweaty training wear in a place where they will stay damp
Keep your damp training gear away from pets, your couch, etc. Consider them contaminated

NEVER bring a dirty GI/Rashgaurd back to the mats - you could be re-contaminating the mats

If you notice a training partner coming to class with dirty gear, EDUCATE them on the dangers!!"

I find that committing acts of violence against those who would step on the mats in shoes helps quite a bit with preventing infections.

I think its time I used my shiny new 'Fail' poster... especially for BJJwizard and the fact that he has pissed off so many people... AND this will probably come back to bite him... AND he has probably done a lot more damage than good to his own club...

i spoke to the owner of the club that he has ben saying he represents on social networking sites, and to be very fair that coach called him and told him to get it off boards straight away. he still pretended it wasnt him even though i know its him, and his own coach knows it him.
