    FAI/LOI's new underage league is going to be Under 19. We're in the Elite League. competing teams are;

    ELITE LEAGUE
    Bohemians
    Bray Wanderers
    Cork City
    Drogheda United
    Mervue United
    St Patrick's Athletic
    Salthill Devon
    Shamrock Rovers
    Shelbourne
    University College Dublin
    Waterford United
    Wexford Youths

    Below the Elite league are 2 divisions;

    Northern Division
    Derry City
    Dundalk
    Fanad United
    Finn Harps
    Longford Town
    Monaghan United
    Sligo Rovers

    Southern Division
    Athlone Town
    Cobh Ramblers
    FC Carlow
    Galway United
    Limerick
    Tralee Dynamos

15s and 17s to follow, Wim Kovermans idea and a very good one at that.

Our 19s are very good :)

It's called under-19, but don't you have to be born in 1993 or later to play in it?

yeah you do. it basically is cutting out a whole raft of underage players with this latest change of age rules. thats from under 21 to under 20 to under 19 all in the space of 5 years! I know personally in my own club there was 8 players from the under 20s from last year who would have been under 20 again this year, but now they have no football as these new rules have ruled them out. this was always the way it was with most clubs in the country, get in an underage team, two years at an age group and see if they can progress. its ok for teams in the big cities, always going to be players at certain ages, but what about players from everywhere else!

I wonder whats the criteria for getting into the elite league is. Looks like a step in the right direction regarding youth football.

I don't know. It's just that down here in Cork, Cork City don't have an U.15 team. They only start after schoolboy level, usually U17 (though possibly U18 this year as the ages have changed to bring them in line with England).

Or maybe Cork City won't enter a team. I don't know what the setup is like with other Irish clubs with regards to the underage side of things.

Shels have a good few underage teams, which only started in the recent past.

I thought ye had underage teams for a good number of years now. I remeber seeing match reports for the Shels youths around 7-8 years ago in newspapers.

That's recent history, when compared to a 116 year total history :p

Thats what ye've in common with Republicans. Wheras they shout 800 years at every oppurtunity, ye shout 116 years at every oppurtunity.:pac:

It was invite as far as I know. Not sure what the overall criteria for the invite was though. Dundalk were selected for elite league but decided to go in the Northern league to reduce travel costs.

Haven't hear this but really hope it's true. Can only be a good thing for the league if players are being developed properly by qualified coaches.

Mahon hopes thats the guts of our 1st team in 2 years time. Some really good players on that team and the best we sending to maynooth on scholarships. He picked them all himself and we have a lad from Crumlin managing them.

We (Galway United) used to have quite successful teams at lots of underage levels around the time Don O'Riordan was manager. U19 is the only one we have now though. I haven't heard anything about U15 or U17 leagues.

Alan Murphy is involved in coaching the U19s apparently.

I'd say City will definitely enter in every possible underage national league. It's a great opportunity for local talent, the competition in a national league should be tougher than the local schoolboys leagues.

Yeah, but all the schoolboy teams will be stripped of their best players. I think it's a good idea though.

This is why I cannot see the sense in getting rid of the A Championship. There has got to be a reserve league of some form for player overage but not ready for the first team. I know some Premier clubs don't want to field an A side but why not just remove the stipulation that Premier clubs have to play in the A Championship?
