Rent allowance as a married couple

Hi folks,
Always found this thread very helpful for information mainly been a lurker on boards,now I have signed up as I need your wise advice.
We are currently in rented accomodation and applying for rent allowance as a married couple,we share the house with another person as we struggled to maintain the rent for a few hard months on our own when my job ceased and had to take in a lodger.
All our savings are gone now and we really are finding each month a struggle from week to week.
It is mainly fine sharing but being a married couple we would like a bit of space to ourselves from time to time.
We have been told we qualify for rent allowance but if it is a case that we found another house in a few months that suited better and we took this house on our own would we be entitled to carry the rent allowance and apply as a married couple living in our own accomodation rather than shared accomodation.
We are married 2 years and have been unable to live on our own for more than 3 mths and really would like our own place but could not dream of doing this without rent allowance.
Any advice really appreciated
