Legal guardianship

What is the definition of legal guardianship and how is it acquired?

If a relative sends his child to come and live with me permanently (as he is working overseas), am I then his guardian? What proof of this do I have, when it comes to legal matters or government applications?

As the child's parent(s) is alive, you cannot be the legal guardian of the child unless you formally adopt them.

Afaik, you would be considered a "trustee", who would be entitled to make certain decisions on behalf of the legal guardian, but you cannot sign for the child as a legal guardian.

I may be wrong though. You would be best to discuss it with the parent(s) and a solicitor, to see what the best options are. Adoption may be an option, if only to make it easier for you to perform your effectively parental role.
