I'm pretty sure you can pay by debit card too. And that's only if you want to book in advance. Very often you can just turn up. And as for how long - some have a week or a month limit, in others you can stay as long as you like. Check out hostelworld.com and you can see what hostels are there and how long you can stay.

    Hey there,

I think it depends on the hostel, but the majority need a credit card if you're booking online. However, have you looked into getting a Visa Debit card? I've made some bookings with my one before without any hassel.

As for the "how much?" part... that really depends on where you're going to. www.hostelbookers.com is a really good site for comparing prices of hostels in an area - definitely check it out!

And "how long"? Pretty much as long as you like. You may have to move into a different room from time-to-time if the one you were in was booked by someone else, but that is never a problem.

What places were you thinking of going to?

im pretty sure that most hostels will accept a novel solution.
    Maybe pay in cash?

as regard to reservations, online systems seems to require a small deposit at the minimum.
A novel solution again, ring a hostel using a phone (that'd be the phone function on your smart phone!) and see if you can simply reserve a bed that way without pre payment or need for a card.
Or just play it by ear and land on spec.

If you are in a popular place then there'll be many options so apart from big events you can normally get a bed somewhere.
Also, the tourist office in a town normally can find accomodation in your budget. They'll do the ringing for you.

What bank are you with? AFAIK BOI are the only ones still using Laser, everyone else is moved to Visa Debit

Laser is meant to be gettin phased out
