I am not at all technical and recently got someone to get rid of a ton of viruses off my PC. I need to download Java to use for my online banking (Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment it tells me it needs), thing is, I'm petrified of downloading a fake one and letting viruses in again - can anyone gove me a link to a 'proper' (and preferably free) one pretty please?:o

    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

Click the first picture on the left and follow the instructions. The one titled 'Java Platform (JDK) 7.'

You just need the JRE not the JDK. JDK includes source and documentation for when you want to develop java. JRE is the runtime environment which is what you want for just running java stuff.

Link is just below where it says JRE and a red download button below it. Then pick the second from the bottom in the list of links (Windows x86 offline). Assuming you are running windows.

I'd want to be 100% sure all the viruses/malware are gone before trusting that machine for online banking.

Microsoft have a utility that creates a bootable DVD virus scanner.
I'd run that for peace of mind first.

    Microsoft Bootable System Sweeper

Thanks so much for all your replies!
CreepingDeath, I'm having problems with that program for some reason - I have downloaded it onto a disc but can't seem to get it to restart with it. I have changed the settings (as per the Help section ) and it restarts and everything but I can't see any antivirus running ... not sure what to do ... any clue???

Once you download Java from www.java.com you are ok, the JRE (Runtime Enviornment) is neccesary to use applications relient on Java, and it is a perfectly safe download. Java is probably used as a security tool for your online banking, hence the reason it requires it.
Just download it from Java.com and install it, make sure you do not install it if coming from a site such as "Free Movies, Mp3s etc.." the likelyhood in this case is it is a virus pretending to be a legitimate piece of software.
Also Oracle have a tool which periodically pops up a message "A java update is available" with a pop up like this:
java-update-available.jpg, this is a legitimate tool called "Java Update" which is safe to use, and should be used to keep your Java files up to date!
