Anyone know how long a handycap is valid for after membership expiry? I was a distance member in a club with a handycap of 17.7 but my membership expired 2 years ago. thinking of starting up again with another club but their saying it expires after 6 months and ive to play 3 rounds? doesnt makes sense

Imagine if i got down to a low number i could just let it expire for 6 months and rehain a bandit handycap from my "3 rounds"... i always thought it held for 3 years but cant find any info on GUI

Anybody in the know on this?

Your handicap becomes invalid as soon as you no longer are a member so it's invalid immediately when your membership expires.
However, if you re-join the (any GUI) club within 6 months of your old handicap expiring, your old handicap can be transferred 'as was'. After this time, (+6 months) you need to hand in 3 cards and apply for a new handicap. You should also indicate any previous handicap you held which may/will influence the 'new' one you get awarded.

i'd say your blue in the face typing that along with CSS & SSS scores to get cut!!!

No offence to the OP by the way.

    Thanks Licksy

One last Q... do you still have to hand in 3 cards a year to keep your GUI?

    No.
Currently, once you have a valid handicap, it remains valid as long as you continue to pay your fees each year. There is no requirement to play any golf or submit any cards. There is a provision for this requirement (to play x number of rounds) and it is in place since this year in England but it's not implemented in Ireland (at this time anyway).
