    Hi,

I'm just wondering could anybody here give me a rough idea on how much a junior I.T support technician should be making salary wise. I have been offered a job with a company i did almost 8 months work placement with and also did part time hours with for around 6 months.

I was asked by the MD what salary I think I should be making and didn't know what to say. He also said that currently companies are not taking on graduates straight out of college.

    Thanks

Anywhere in the 22,000 - 25,000 bracket I would imagine.

Saying that, different companies would have different rates. The price I quoted above was what I guess an IT company whereas in my work we have an intern here in a support role on circa 40,000/annum so it is hard to estimate without knowing more info about the company like size, industry etc.

Also on the part where he said companies are not taking grads straight out of college, that is BS. Sounds like he's trying to use a scare tactic. Plenty of companies are taking grads, especially in IT. My class alone this year had about 10 of us walk straight into jobs so don't buy what he's trying to sell you

25k for a Junior Tech? An intern on 40k?!? Where do you work????

Back in 2004/2005, in a broadband support role, I was on ~18,000. I didn't get 25k until I had a couple of years experience behind me. I didn't get 40k until I was a specialist.

This was in Dublin, but I would assume it has dropped a bit since.

The company is relatively small, it has 6 employees not including myself, in the IP video surveillance field, I will also be building PC's configuring equipment as well as providing phone support.

In my experience the pay would be ~€24k (IT service desk starting salary is ~€22k), but you have specific experience of the business and doing a generalist role so I would say chance your arm and suggest a reasonable higher amount up to €32k. Of course depending on your relationship and the sense of humor of the boss you could really go for it and suggest €40k.

An investment bank - London office.

Saying that the intern is on a 6-month placement so would be getting half that

    18k.

Do not be greedy and risk losing the opportunity to get a job.

Experience is everything in IT. The money can come later.

I started on a helpdesk in Dublin in 2006 on 27k.

Very doubtful. Didn't mean it like that.

I went for a couple of helpdesk jobs and the salaries on offer varied a good bit. The 27k was at the very upper limit of what was on offer (hence why I took it!)

Horrible place. I served my time there too in the distant past.

I get the feeling they are talking about software engineers in that article.

IT technicians and software engineers have little in common.

Hi OP, generally the salary for IT Support Technicians tend to be between €20,000-€30,000 (I was earning around that much maybe slightly more on my first IT support Job but salary was reduced due to job cuts) on average for a junior IT support technician it would be around €24,000-€27,000 depending on your experience and what role you be in and responsibilities, if your starting off might be less but if you have experience you might get a bit more. Sometimes it depends on the level too whether its 1st, 2nd or 3rd level, the higher the level of technical support the higher the salary!

You have great work experience and those placements and months of work experience will stand to you so you might get some leeway and be able to negotiate a reasonable salary with a new employer.

I honestly think that it is a crap thing to say to any IT Graduate! There are IT jobs out there even for graduates, obviously tough and hard to get into without a certain level of experience but at the same time they are hiring graduates just out of college and pay special attention to those who have excellent degrees/results/award/qualification. Don't mind him, he is talking rubbish, he is only trying to turn you off I'd say and turn you away. There are loads of IT jobs out there. IT sector is good at the moment so don't think its too much of a worry for graduates unless employers are looking for specific things like in the area of software development which is totally different to technical support or say application support.

There are plenty of graduate programmes out there provided by companies in the IT sector so don't listen the MD. General graduate positions vary but say what he meant was that they are limited jobs maybe in his company or what ever sector he was on about or just for graduates as a whole regardless of career field, not so much that there isn't any, there are jobs there for graduates straight out of college. Most of classmates and myself got a job straight out of college even though it was after graduation before I started in my job, I still had a job secured and lined up by the time I were graduating! I've since left the job due to certain circumstances but have had a job since but left that to go back to college and now back looking for work!

Good luck with the job search OP

There is over 4,000 unfilled IT jobs in Ireland at the moment and some of them are for graduates- don't believe that BS OP!

What percentage of them are IT support technicians? Not a lot.

What kind of experience and qualifications do you have OP? Do you only have the experience at this company? Do you have any industry certs? I personally I think that your boss is trying to scare you into taking what ever he offers you, but then again it's an employers market right now so if I were you I would think about the experience more then the money right now.

IMO the whole IT Support sector was one of the worst areas hit by the recession. Lots of people will say that there are loads of jobs in IT, but because IT is such a broad field, statements like that are fairly ridiculous. Yes companies are crying out for good developers (.Net & Java for example) but not so much for IT Support staff anymore, infact alot of IT Support staff are seen as expenditures that most companies are trying to whittle down on, those that do get hired are usually offered very low wages (€21k - €24k) or on one of those 'work for free' Fás schemes.

Plus some employers are looking for the sun, moon and stars these days too. The amount of job specs that I've seen for IT Support staff that expect you to have an MCSE, CCNA, VCP, etc coupled with a 2.1 BSc and a shed load of experience is actually quite frighting. They also tend to lump stuff like project work on top of all that and then offer salaries in the region of €30k - €40k. I wouldn't mind but they probably get a couple of thousand CV's for these roles so that can pick and choose as they please.

I haven't noticed a lot of IT support jobs out there either (excluding the foreign language jobs), and I've been looking pretty hard.

I am very much looking into that area too OP, but it's quiet hard to find a job at just level 1 technical support without meeting special requirements as well as what ever relevant qualifications they are looking for. Keep searching OP the right job is out there whether its Technical Support or IT go for it!
