Stop at junctions in housing estates

I have my test next week , and I just had a pretest my instructor pulled me on coasting around the corner in 2nd gear with the clutch depressed he said ideally I should stop every time before entering the new road and take off in 1st gear.

I thought in the exam this would have been seen not progressive driving? Hence the coasting around the corner looking either side and going ahead if it was safe to do so.

Id like any advice would be great!

Coasting isn't allowed at all, you'll get marked down for that.

Yeah, I wouldn't coast. Keep it in gear! If there's a Yield sign slow down and prepare to stop. And of course if there's a stop sign you HAVE to stop. Just ensure you have observed no oncoming traffic and move off.

....and technically housing estates area public roads, observe the rules of the road!

Coasting is not allowed, so avoid doing that!

If there is a yield sign, or markings on the road that indicate yield (an upside down triangle, or double dashed lines on the 'exit' side of the road) then you do not have to stop if you know it is clear. If there is a stop sign, or a solid white line on the exit side of the road, then you must stop, and takeoff in first gear when it is clear.

If it is safe to go, you can take the turn in 2nd gear, but do it with your foot off the clutch (you might be surprised how slow you can go in 2nd gear without labouring the car). There's no need to coast.

Ideally, the order in which you should approach these situations is
Information - what's around me, should I signal?
Position - get in the correct position for a left or right turn, or whatever is appropriate
Speed - choose your speed for the corner - don't be braking as you are going around the corner, make sure you are at the appropriate speed beforehand
Gear - once you have chosen your speed, pick a gear that suits - often 2nd for left and right turns in estates

If it's clear to go, you can then go, still in 2nd, still with your foot off the clutch. If it's not clear to go, you must stop, have it in first and be ready to go, looking for a gap, and briefly checking your mirrors to make sure that nothing has changed around you.

you got given out to for coasting... not for being too fast...

never ever coast.. ever.. coasting is bad...

if there's a yield sign then yes you can just roll around the corner as long as the car is in gear - second gear more than likely... if there's a stop sign you stop no matter what...

just make sure the car is in gear...

Yea, you'll get it with practice - you don't need to get caught up on "when should I change gear" etc. it'll come with practice, just make sure not to go around corners with your foot on the clutch.

The most common reason people coast around corners is because they approach the corner too fast, and are therefore in too high of a gear, and rather than take time to slow down to an appropriate speed, they come into it too fast which doesn't leave time to slow down, so they just put their foot on the clutch and coast around it.
