    Hi.

    How does compensation work?

Can an E- (30% ?) be bumped up to a pass by compensation?

Yup, as long as your GPA is above 2.0 and you haven't failed more than 25% of modules from that stage (usually 3 modules). The quote below explains it well.
E Grade (Grade Point Value 1.6)

E grades are failing grades, which have a grade point value of 1.6. These E
grades may convert to P(C) (pass with compensation) only where you have
completed and obtained passing grades in modules accounting for 75% or
more of the total credit required to successfully complete the stage (usually
9 modules) and the compensation GPA for the attempt at the stage is 2.00
or greater. Provisional E grades are then considered compensated and final
    grades of P(C) are awarded.

Nice one, surely no matter how bad this module goes I will get at least 30%….

So even an E- is covered? definitely?

All E grades are treated the same in this case. Its possible but hard enough to fail outright if you've put in a bit of work. Only you and the examiners can judge on that :)

Just take note that you have to complete all modules in the stage as well before you can compensate.

Basically what it means is that, for example, if you get an E in the semester 1 exams, it won't be changed to a P(C) until you have completed the stage, which is usually at the end of semester 2.
