hello everyone, first time poster here.
I just need a bit of help here, Im wondering it is possible to get some/all vat back on tools I have purchased for my work? Tools can be quite expensive at times. I have receipts to prove of purchases. If im entitled to anything where could I go about getting it.
    cheers.

Are you VAT registered? If so just put the amount of VAT on your VAT3 form. Using www.ros.ie is the easiest way. Setup direct debit and your VAT balance will be settled each time you file a return.

Are you self employed? It's not clear from your post.

No Im an employee in a garage. I suppose if im not vat registered I can't get any vat back? and I have to be self employed to get Vat registered?

Correct, I presume your employer won't reimburse you for the cost of the tools?

Are you claiming the flat rate allowance for mechanics? It's designed to compensate you for the costs of tools, etc.

Read this - http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/employee-expenses.html - and then follow the link to the Revenue spreadsheet.
