Just curious as to what peoples opinions are on whats going to happen tonight with regards to the riots

Bearing in mind the threats of the brit pm regards punishment, the extra 10,000 cops on the street, the threat of water cannon and plastic bullets. do you think it will be enough to deter the rioters off the streets?

Mod note: This thread is to discuss the anti-riot measures put in place in UK tonight only.
General discussion is best kept in the main thread.

    Eh, we can only guess!

But I'm sure with all the extra force there will be a little less hassle.

    EDIT: Where's the Pole?

Most bizarre poll ever in AH this surely.

I think there'll be one or two 'disturbances', particularly outside of London, but not even close to the past few nights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,246 ✭✭✭ardinn

Why? Simple enough - do you think they have done enough today to make people think twice about hitting the streets??

i think there will be at least 1 policeman/woman killed or one of the rioters will die along the way, the army most likely will be sent in. i predict disruption to the start of the premiership as things worsen over the next few days, boris johnson to resign as mayor and the tories reputation to take a futher battering in the popularity polls.

With that amount of hard ons walking the street, theres bound to be more rioting

I'd say the police will start crackin' heads.

They need army and riot police ASAP with a full measure curfew in effect, If your out after 9 you are fair game for plastic bullets , batons, getting run down by police horse .

These ****ers arent rioting for a cause they are just scum and the only way to deal with them is knock them back into their place, also organisers on twitter or any other social media should be brought before the courts and face the full wrath of the law.

I fear that the persons doing damage will just use phone tech or other methods to move around to other possible locations and/or weak spots, to do more of the same.

I hope I am wrong and would be very glad to be so.

Those rioters will look upon the increased police numbers as a challenge and the paranoid in me thinks that this is too well orchestrated to be just about a bunch of kids texting each other on where to hit next.

I understand the terrible international image of them bringing in the army and how that would look worldwide with the upcoming olympics, but I feel they should have brought them in last night.

It really is a volatile situation, imagine another person got shot by authorities, even if it was "justified" they could make a very bad situation very very worse.

I honestly dont know what I would do if I was in charge other than whats allready/is being done - i just think I would have done it sooner.

Talking into account the A4 leaflets that were handed out to the rioters advising them how to escape being caught, I assume they were either done very fast or in advance.
With that in mind, I too think its at least partly organised - and if so, this could mean that there will be more either tonight or at a night in a day or two when they will attempt things again.

I'm hoping unequivocally though that it will be peaceful.

I voted yes, although I think it will be a close one, on one had you'll have the police who have probably gotten a severe bollocking for the last 2 nights and will be out in force. On the other hand all the scummers are going to think its a right free for all tonight, I think looting is a big draw for alot of these feckers, politics ? Police brutality ? who cares, I want myself a free lcd TV.

It's understandable that people want to see sharp shock reaction by the authorities who need to show the public they are in charge ,mean buisness and not be weak .Whatever it takes to stop this , do it and start doing it now tonight.

If it was Republicans/Unionists rioting in Belfast it would've lasted all of 30 mins. Water cannon, cracked skulls etc. Bate the ****e outta pasty Paddy, but the Met can't be seen to disturb those poor ethnic minorities who need a new flat screen tv and a pair of jeans.

The very least they should use should be tear gas and rubber bullets.

i really dont know why they dont use the military.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 34,567 ✭✭✭✭Biggins

i really dont know why they dont use the military.
Part of the reason is that to do so, would be an admittance that the police force is not enough to cope.
On top of that, if the thieves - I refuse to call them protesters - see by the use of the army, that the police is considered inadequate given high rioter numbers, then when the army would eventually pull out, the thieves once again would return in the mentality "Well its only the police and they couldn't cope the last time, so lets get back to robbing and damaging, etc..."

I think If the Army is brought in the situation will get more destructive as there will be a lot of fires and bombs of some sort
You cant treat violence with violence that being said I don't think you run around with a white flag either

There is more to come, started already today. Think we will see a lot more outside of London over the next few days given the number of police brought into the city today.

Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool and Bristol will kick off tonight on a bigger scale.... hope I'm wrong.

I'll take this back now - by the way it looks already, I might well have been very wrong.

I think it'll make them do the opposite. I'd say the gravitas of what they've done will hit home finally and they'll stay indoors with their new iPhones and tellys and hairdressing equipment...

I dont think it will be as bad in London tonight but it will still be terrifying for the locals. Its the other Cities where it will kick off tonight.

I grew up in London, and on one scale or another, there were often riots kicking off in one or other of the errr, disadvantaged(?) areas- It goes off every few years, the locals get to throw their doodies out of the pram over some percieved slight, it calms down, and there is a lot of handwringing for a few years afterwards about "what went wrong" by the "thinking"classes. What went wrong is that England is so bleedin PC that the scroats get cocky every few years and decide to sh1t in their own kennel, the cops get nasty and batter them back into their box, it goes quiet for a while, and then people forget, the luvvies offer outreach programmes, everyone loves everyone, then it kicks off again. This too will pass. It's just a phase they are going through.
