    She currently drives an 04 focus saloon. High spec model. Leather, F/R electric windows , air con and sunroof. So, She has about 12000 + her trade in.
    She is thinking about a Volvo S40, Ford Mondeo and VW Passat.

    Out of the examples above, it'll be easier to pick up a higher spec S40 - I have one :)

    How much mileage does she do per year? There's a good few 08 Volvo S40 1.8F (Flexifuels) knocking around, and I'd say you could get a good deal on one, but they need to be serviced every 10,000km so I'd only get one if I was doing 15,000km or less per year.
