    Hi all,

I'm badly in need of a new car. I've got about €9K-€11K MAX. No trade-ins etc.
    Here's what I'm looking for:

    Want:
    •Saloon car.
    •Diesel
    •Cruise control
    •Good on fuel

    Need:
•Lots of space in the back
    •Low-ish mileage
    •Service history

    I've come across afew cars;
    •06' Volvo S40 diesel
•05' Audi A5 diesel (Not a very good spec)
•07' Mazda 6 petrol (Really want a diesel, but this is in my price range, and has only 44K miles on it, and 1 year parts and labour warranty !!!)

Anyone know what the Mazda 6 are like ? Also other cars would be appreciated.

Don't ask me why sellers try to push this "Lady owner" crap. (Although he hasn't for this ad..)

Anyone who's looked at a few cars with "Lady owners" would know straight away that chances are you are wasting your time. (From my own experience..)

OP, would you not try push into the new emissions based tax system for cheaper tax? Would 9-11 K cover a 2008 car these days?

My friend recently got 08 vw passat 1.9 tdi for 8.5 k  (through carzone - he trade in his toyota corolla 1.4 petrol ,'05 and paid extra 4k).. ok, there is pretty high mileage, but after tests and checks, car is fine. actually we were looking for skoda octavia 08 diesel, but all they had similar mileage like passat ... you can find good and cheap car, just keep looking.

bring down a vectra sri cdti from the north. the insides of the top spec are some bit nice. my friend recently got a 07 top top spec with sat nav etc and 48k miles for €9300 inc. vrt etc. you should be able to get an 08 in your budget.

    UK car and no cruise.

Nothing wrong with a UK imo... the above Skoda also has no mention of cruise..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I think cruise can be retrofitted on those by swapping the indicator stalk and enabling it on vagcom?

Nothing wrong with UK at all, but I'd look into any UK diesel very carefully as clocking is rife, Passat repmobile is a prime candidate. OP also would like cruise.

Im sure the lads in Croydon will "pick" you up a good deal if you ask them.

Might be a little fire damage though ...

Mondeo would tick all your boxes , theyre bomb proof and you'd get a really decent spec for that money.

    basically anything on this page

I also think the Passat is a nicer car and should hold its value better. Its engine is more reliable in 1.9 TDI form and probably more economical than the equivalent Mondeo. The Mondeo however is probably faster and has more space in the back though.

Depends on what you prioritise really!

That Skoda is a UK car. The lack of an armrest, manual rear windows and 18 inch wheels is the giveaway. Wont have maxidot display either. Irish vrs´s are a higher spec.

    Well spotted.
Plus the High number are possibly a tell tale as well
along with the fact you will have MPH instead of KPH

The last (facelifted) Vectra is pretty underrated especially when it's got that pokey 1.9CDTi under the bonnet. That engine is much better than the all of the comparable VW units. I can't get over how lads here can be snobby about Vectras yet salivate over Octavias and feckin' aul boy car Passats.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,238 ✭✭✭Ardennes1944

i like vectras, and octavias but not passats. in fact i would prefer a Superb over any a passat any day. a 150bhp sri vectra is a nice car and as reliable as any.
the one on the right here s5001736.jpg is the one i mentioned earlier. its the first vectra that i liked the inside of. twin exhausts, climate/cruise control, heated seats, sat nav, 150bhp, 6 cd changer etc, all in for €9300, a fine car imo. i would love to own it and i would also love to own vectra/EPM's Skodas, all cars which you could be proud of.

RE the Vectra, the reason I dislike them is because they truly feel like they have been designed and built by someone who does not like cars! The interior is not pleasant, gearbox iffy(on the one I was) and the entire car just felt cheap.

I do agree though the sri models are okay, and the CDTI engine under the bonnet is its best asset.

The Insignia is far better :)

I dont know about the Insignia drove one a while back for a week nice diesel engine in it looks well from the outside other than that no way, the whole interior felt cheap and felt like it could fall apart at any second, plus the handling on it wasnt great didnt feel like you could trust it to go were you wanted it to go.

Looking at prices in UK, a 09 Insignia (the first of them) is approx 5000 pounds dearer than a 08 vectra, and has higher VRT when importing. The Insignia might be better, but given the price differential you can't really compare. I think the last of the Vectras are really good value for money, but then I'd be biased !!!

Go way outta that.... the Insignia is a great car, Elite spec is fab, looks good inside, well kitted out, a chassis that's actually capable, all the things that the Vectra isn't. The Vectra is ugly, horrible inside, below average to drive, and feels cheap. They're cheap second hand for a reason! The best thing about them is the Fiat engine.

I dont know about that now the only thing i liked about the Insignia was the exterior styling other than that found it to be a horrible car, interior looked ok till yeh touched anything felt like it could break at any second as for the chassis is in no way capable reminded me of my old 99 Astra.

    Come off the drugs :D

Why do you think the Vectra lasted so long?
    Great cars.

Lets see how many Gens of the Insignia will be around..
I know of 3 dealers in my local that would not take a trade in of an insignia unless they got it for buttons.. Nobody wants them as far as they are concerned.
    As for styling...!!

My Niece has an Elite 160 as you happen to mention it

Where in gods name did they get the color co-ordination from ??
    black Car,
    Cream leather,
    So far so good..
But a Chocolate brown Dash...!!! :eek
    C'mon ..!!!!
    Looks like Puke..

    As for styling

The rear of the insignia reminds me so much of the Mk1 Hyundai Coupe.
    Prehistoric.
Even back in the 90's that looked Dire

Driven the Passat and the S40, S40 is amuch nicer drive IMO.

If it was me though i wouldnt go with any of your options, id go with a 08 honda accord icdti sport. Might just be in your price range if you can haggle, well spec'd car with a truly brilliant engine and gives serious MPG, 55-60 if driven right and only 300 a year tax. Lovely lovely car

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/Accord/2.2-i-CT/201131203766323/advert?channel=CARS

If you cant afford that then I wouldnt bother with a 07 or 06, as you will be hard pushed to sell them on. You will pick up a decent 04/05 one these days for about 4-6k, only trouble is tax is nearly a grand.

I had one 2 months ago and sold it for a 530d 05, and im not joking i kinda miss the honda...especially at the pump!

Diesel Vectras are notorious for clutch problems. When you replace the clutch the fly wheel also needs to be done. To do the clutch/flywheels you have to drop the engine sub frame out which is awkward as ****.

A mate of mine was quoted 2K by opel to get it done. Seriously. He sourced a kit from ebay for £500 sterling, but even though he's a mechanic by trade he can't do it himself because he doesn't have to space and a hoist so he's going to have to pay the labour anyway which is about €800.
