    Hi Everyone

Need advice Im looking at pajero sport 2001 model. My use of a 4x4 will be limited. Ive been told they aint the best offroad. To be honest Id doubt if I will ever need to offroad. I got caught last couple of years with the snow and all I reguire is that it gets me to work in bad weather without any hassles and throwing mountain bikes into the back of it the odd time. After that it will be laid up. Fuel consumption wont be an issue because it will be rarely used My mate in work knows the fella who is selling it says its in good nick . Test drove it today seems alright not that i know much about 4x4 .

    Does anyone own one?

    Are they any good?

    Do they give problems?

    Or any other issues?

It should be fine for dealing with winter commute roads. Give it a set of good tyres.

Like all cars, get a mechanic to check the basics, preferably one familiar with this model, make sure the 4x4 system is working ok for a start.

The 2.5 has a timing belt, you'll need to determine when it was changed/when its due to be changed.

Give it a good workout, preferebly a good long slog up a motorway hill or similar, watch the temperature, head gaskets were a weak point on these, often caused by poor cooling - dodgy water pumps, stuffed rads etc.

If its in good nick and you look after it you'll have no probs.

The money would want to be very small and the jeep in very good condition. Can be very expensive to run, both fuel and repair costs when it comes to putting it through a test.

Would'nt be my first choice of 4x4 but if the money was right it would be an ok purchase.

Out of interest what sort of money would it be bought for?

Correct, the 2.5 pajero is very under powered and an absolute animal on fuel.

3.2 is not available in the sport model, and yes the 2.5 drinks the diesel

The 2.5 has 90 bhp vs the 2.8 with 130 bhp.

I have a 2.8, it gives late 20's in MPG, overall consumption would be 28 MPG.

thats on the older mk1, mk2,mk3 pajeros, the newer sports/2.5 pajero's have 115 bhp engines. Pajero sports are 4 door narrow versions of pajero and only come with 2.5 litre diesel or a petrol if you can find one. View link to see pictures of a sport

well said doctorchopper. nonsense to say the 2.5 pajero sport is thirstier than the 3.2 pajero.
op if you want a cheap runabout the sport should suit you fine but beware of very high mileage. its a buyers market at the moment so 2500 should pick you up a fairly good one.

I think their lineage is more from the L200 pickup than the Pajero; similar to the way the Hilux surf (and then the 100 series LandCruiser) came from the Hilux.

    Hi lads

I was recommended the jeep thru a mate in work whom knew where the jeep came from that it had done no offroading and had been looked after with servicing etc It was just used for general driving. As I really only want it for the potential bad weather in the winter Im not worried about mpg Ill be quite happy to leave it in the yard until I need it. I dont intend going to the artic with it:)

I bought the jeep today. It had been only nct d yesterday passed flying colours. It drives well for its year its in good condition (TOUCH WOOD)

    Thanks everyone for your replies

Spot on, i was trying to think of a comparison but couldn't for some reason, i believe its the same engine as well. They seem to be selling for a lot cheaper than the lwb and swb pajero's too

It's taxed till the end of the year:) I'd of bought a commercial only I can't get it taxed because of the twats in the council. It certainly won't be taxed all year round. Really it be there incase of bad weather. Council can't be depended on to clear the roads where I live, being off work or breaking up car will cost me more
