Kia Ceed SW Maintenance Intervals

    Hi Boarders,

My local Kia dealership is telling me the car (1.6 CRDI) must be serviced every 20,000kms in order to keep the terms of the seven year warranty. The same is printed on the specification on the Kia ireland site:

    http://www.kiamotors.ie/~/media/IE/Add-ons/Downloads/Downloadable%20files/Technical-specification-brochures/2011%20ceedsw%20spec.pdf

However the Kia UK sites says it must be done every 20,000 miles (32,000kms) http://www.kia.co.uk/~/media/specifications/spec-sheet-ceedsw.ashx

In addition, the handbook provided with the car indicates a service interval of 30,000kms.

Based on an average mileage of 30,000km/yr and avg service cost of €200, Kia Irelands policy will cost me an extra €700 on servicing costs.
Thats €700 could take me on holidays for a week!

Why oh why would they need the car to be serviced more frequently in Ireland? Surely this is yet another case of rip-off Ireland!

Do I have a case here to take up with Kia Ireland?

Its not uncommon have differences between countries with servicing intervals. One possibility is that Kia have evaluated the driving conditions in Ireland (lots of short stop-start journeys) and decided that a shorter service interval is required to protect the engine.
Renault diesel engines have an oil control system which automatically monitors the oil quality and may even call the car in for service before its due if the quality drops. It can also stretch the interval out to 24 months, buy highly unlikely.
I would think that 20,000 klms is a fair service interval and most of the Japanese diesels have this interval too.
Last possibility is that the oil type/viscosity has the 20000 km life to keep costs down as opposed to Long life fully synthetic (and more expensive!) type used for longer oil change intervals....

20,000kms is plenty long enough for the oil to be in there, be thankful that the Irish dealer has some mechanical sympathy.

    +1

I would even consider 20k km a tad bit long between oil changes on modern diesel engines especially if you want to prolong the life of the turbo.

He should be thankful - im paying him €200 for a drop of oil and a new filter - a job i could do myself it it didn't breach the warranty T&C!

Can't see how driving conditions would differ all that much from the UK - 90% of my driving is on motorways and dual cabbiageways...

    Thanks for your points -
But I still can't see how the discrepancy is justified

Someone has to say for the warranty ;)

As with all warranties, manufacturers cannot demand that you have the car serviced with them in order for the warranty to be valid. Once the car has been serviced correcty to Kia specifications then the warranty will stand.

As the Nissan Doctor says, doing it yourself (properly) does not breach the warranty! If the dealer says it does, take him to court.

Proper oil and a proper filter will set you back no more than €40 for most common cars these days. Plus your time :)

I dunno would i be to quick to jump in & start servicing it myself without fully sussin it out first though, what other stuff are they doing in that service that keeps the warranty in check, inspections/visual checks & what not? That they might be keeping record of being done? Or at least saying is done? Or at least if the service was done with a kia dealer they can presume where done as standard? They could call it into question otherwise?

(i'm purely speculating, any kia owners trying to keep there warranty in check please jump in!)

Servicing it yourself wouldn't hold up a warranty claim unless you are a qualified mechanic.

Once the service items specified by kia are carried out and recorded by a qualified person/garage at the recommended intervals then the warranty must be covered and if they argue, a solicitors letter will sort it.

See EU policy on Block Exemption. Prevents main dealers monopolising on servicing etc.

    I think my point here has been missed by some;

Whilst I am able to change oil/filter etc. I am not a qualified mechanic so understand why Kia require car to be serviced by a garage

Just pissed off that their policy is for it to be serviced every 32,000km in the UK but every 20,000km across the pond.

Apart from generating extra revenue for Kia main dealers, there's no reason why for example a Kia in Newry would require any more servicing than one a few klicks away in Dundalk!!!!

Local Kia Garage says service interval is actually 15k kms.

Just because the UK say 32,000km , it doesnt make them right. Or any moreso than Kia Ireland. As others have said 32,000km is an awfull long time to have the same oil in your car. Personnally I dont leave mine half that.
