I have been having a nightmare with Ebay’s so called “customer support”. I’ve been an Ebay member for about 5 or 6 years with approx 130 transactions. I have never put a foot wrong and I consider myself to be a good Ebayer.

My problem started around the 20th of July. I moved to South Africa on the 12th of July and plan to stay here until christmas. I was watching two items on Ebay and planned on buying them, I was actually discussing postage costs with the sellers. Naturally I was logging into my account from Johannesburg to keep an eye on things everyday. Around the second or third day my password would not work and I received an E mail informing me that my account was stopped due to a security breach.

I went through all the steps in the E mail to try and get up and running again but it was no use. The steps bring you around in circles and I ended up having to contact customer support. Ebay’s customer support is an absolute joke. The instructions I received were extremely inaccurate, mainly because the links they suggest to follow do not exist. On top of that, the response time is quite slow, and as before, the procedure takes you around in circles.

The representative that contacted me said the reason for the shut down was probably because of accessing the account from another country. I have no problem with such safety measures if warranted and if easily fixed. However, I am at my wits end. Eventually I was told to contact the customer help line in Ireland or the UK to confirm my identity and reset my password. The problem is I can’t call either numbers as they are toll free numbers. Toll free numbers cannot be called internationally, and also cannot be reached through skype. My Irish phone doesn’t work here, so I simply cannot contact these helplines. I explained my problem to the representative and asked if they could give me a regular phone line to contact or if they could call me on my South African cell phone instead. I received no answer to these questions and have actually received no response at all since the 26th of July.

I am furious that my account has been shut down through no fault of my own and that I cannot re open it. What really annoys me is Ebay’s complete lack of responsibility for their mess, and the fact that they cannot be bothered to reply is disgraceful. I don’t know where to go from here. I don’t want to wait until I get home as I fear my account will be completely closed by then due to lack of action. Again Ebay didn’t answer me when I asked if that would be the case.

I would be extremely grateful if you could help me out with this one. All they need to do is give me a regular number to call, or else call me on my South African cell number. Then we could sort this out. I would also like to point out that I have logged into my account from Johannesburg several times last year when I lived here and there was no problem.

    What can I do?

That is news to me as I was accessing my Ebay buyer/seller account from other EU countries, but obviously that is something I have to keep my mind on in near future.

this happened to me a few times actually, they like to make sure you are who you say you are, especially if you're selling stuff, there are loads of scam artists on there

This happened to me as well, but on PayPal. I was holidaying in Asia and I logged in to my account while I was there. When I got back I found that they limited my account, couldn't send/receive payments etc. I just sent them a scan of my bank statement and it was sorted eventually. Don't know if that will help you though !
