If a am going through a cross junction where it is on a green and I am approaching at 50km per hour, what speed should I reduce to on approach and then going thru junction.should I always look both ways as I am going thru junction in case if emergency vehicles?

On going through a town ,I stay at forty because there is quite a bit of traffic and I need to be on the alert etc. Is it ok to stay in third gear as I am never exceeding the forty and it feels uncomfortable in fourth

I am at forty and there is a light controlled pedestrian crossing.there are people at the crossing.is it ok to go to thirty and third in case one of them takes the mad idea to cross.they are right at junction.

I am passing a truck that has stopped.there is no oncoming traffic
Is it ok to go into third and thirty.the driver is out looking at something and concerned there could be another pedestrian around

Thanks a mill.I am interest in getting the progress and reaction to hazards correct

I wouldn't slow down to a particular speed. I wouldn't accelerate too either. A quick glance left and right to make sure all's okay would suffice.

Stay in the gear that's most applicable to the situation. If you think third is better go for it. If not don't. Gears and their relationship with speed is not exact, there are plenty of variables such as hills, weight of the car, weight of passengers etc that will effect what gear would be best.

However that being said, travelling at 40 isn't always the best thing to do. Some situations may require it, but if you can safely get up to the speed limit, you should do so.
Failure to make adequate progress is a mistake that most learner drivers make, and it will incur marks against you in the test.

I wouldn't slow down to 30, i might come off the accelerator a bit, but i definitely would not purposely slow down to 30 just because i'm approaching a crossing which has a green light for me to proceed through.

I wouldn't slow down too much if i didn't have to, if there is no on-coming traffic and there is sufficient room to pass i would not slow down to 30. Perhaps slow a little ie 45km, but not as much as you describe.

Your instructor is the best person to ask about these kind of questions, as i can only give you a vague idea of how to react as each situation will be different. Sometimes there will be plenty of space to overtake a parked vehicle which wouldn't require you to slow down; but then again it could be a very tight country road which would mean you should slow down a lot.

Best of luck with everything anyway, hope that helped a bit!

in almost all cases above i would be in a gear that allows me to noticeably accelerate away on clearing the situation. as stated -failure to make progress is significant, and so will negate this possibility.
In real life however slowing while approaching pedestrians is like a red rag to a bull, no matter what speed. - ever see a pedestrian step out in front of a car thats accelerating hard ?
    best of luck anyway

Its the difference between visibly slowing versus coming off the accelerator to cover the brake so as to be able to react quickly.

You can't assume everyone saw you, you can't assume everyone hear you and you can't assume no one will fall or be pushed in front of you. Accelerating hard...is not a good idea in my opinion.

Come off the accelerator. Cover the brake with your right foot. You should be fine.

Definitely don't accelerate approaching pedestrians. Often pedestrians only look once left and right before crossing which only gives them an indication of where cars are, as opposed to how fast they are going or whether they are accelerating. You'd need at least two glances for that.
