NCT and VIN number?

Was just thinking about this the other day. Do the NCT physically check the VIN numbers on each car against an online system? I forgot my VLC when I went for the NCT last month so obviously they dont check against that (not that I've ever been asked for it when I did have it) .

Surely with the amount of cars tested every year, if they do check them, someone has had to have been informed in the test centre that their car and documents dont match at some stage? If they dont check whats to stop someone borrowing a car the same model and colour and sending it through with the plates of the car they want a fresh NCT for?

They do check them, someone on here recently had a Renault and the VIN was located in the boot somewhere and the NCT could not find it, owner had to contact his local Renault dealer to find out where it was located.

Back when I had sports cars I wondered what would happen if I tested someone elses car with my plates and discs. I don't think the original nct crowd used to check but they do now

A friend were wondering this two, he had two cars same model and same year and same colour but one was heavily modified, decat and a few other things which needed to be changed before the nct. The standard car passed and before he sold it he thought about swapping the plates and ncting the standard car in place of the modified one. I thought they didnt check but maybe they do.

It was a while back and he decided against it in the end and just swapped over the bits for the test.
