Heading to Sicily and will rent a bike for a week in early September starting out from Syracuse / Catania.

Any advice out there? Blorg, I think you were touring there one year but I can't find a post?

    Thanks.

I was in that area last year and while I didn't cycle I did tour about in a car. If you are around Catania I'd recommend Etna. I went around in the narrow guage train and the scenery is spectacular. The "northern" half is beautiful and the "southern" is rugged thanks to the most recent volcanic activity.

Further south, Syracuse is ok, but a bit touristy. We based ourselves in Noto and toured about in the direction of Modica/Regusa. The roads were good on the east /south coast tending to ish the further into the centre you go. There can be road closures due to landslides where the entire road can be washed away which can mean long detours.

Be prepared for places being closed at lunchtime - early afternoon, but they open late in the evening. The wines from Avola and Etna are lovely. Cerasula di Vittoria is a favourite, and the Etna Nero dAvola can be great.

Thanks Idleater, I'll be at a wedding a first in Ragusa for a couple of days so should be able to check the roads around there out.

Did you go to Enna or Monti Iblei?

Regusa is nice, ate in the Michelin starred restaurant in the old town. In that area visit Modica for its chocolate, they make it differently there adding sugar at the end so it's crystalline.

Noto to Syracuse is nice too as is Avola.

In the other direction, Agrigento is worth a visit as is Enna. We stayed in a small village in the center directly north of agrigento and the further west you go, the more rural. Distances get quite big due to the windy roads and landslide detours. If you are planning on cycling I'd head towards the east coast. There's still plenty of hills just inland but it's more geared to tourism.

I'll go further into detail if you like but it's a great part of Italy you'll enjoy it.
