Smoothies- do they have any fibre?

    I've recently bought a smoothie maker and I'm loving it- I go into the shops and buy all sorts of fruit and feel great about it! However, my friend has told me that by pulping the fruit, I'm removing most of the fibre and that smoothies aren't great. Is this true? Is there anything I can add to the smoothie to add more fibre or should I eat something with it?

    Are you talking about a juicer or a smoothie maker (essentially a blender).

    A juicer separates the juice from the solid pulp, which is the fibre. A smoothie maker doesn't remove anything, so the fibre stays there.

    So either you or your friend is mixing you the machine you bought with the other one

    No, I have a smoothie maker not a juicer, but my friend knew this. What he was saying was that my body didn't have to break the fruit veg/down cos the smoothie maker already did this, therefore there was little fibre to be had and that was needed when taking something with loads of sugars (fruit).

    I'm due for an op to remove wisdom teeth later this week, so could be on a smoothies and soup diet for a few days after.

    I'd been hoping to stay on the paleo diet so if anybody has any good recipes for steak and veg smoothies, send em my way!

    What do you think teeth are for? The smoothie maker is replacing them.

    I know, but my teeth don't grind food down to a pulp like consistency like the smoothie maker does!:D

    Ow! No recipes but my thoughts are with you!

    I'm not a huge fan of drinking calories, no matter what the form. Just because the chewing process sets the stage for the all the things your body needs to do in order to digest a food properly including getting ready to send satiety signals.

    Chewing even releases substances that protect the teeth, which is why we see tooth erosion from fruit juice but not from whole fruit.

    Nope, but avacado, spinach, celery, cucumber and coconut milk makes a damn good smoothy.:)

    blending it doesn't remove the fibre. It mgiht digest quicker, but the fibre is still there and still not digestible. and will still do its job.

    If you'r like me and find it hard to stomach food in the morning here's a tasty breakfast smoothy with "fiber"

    500ml of skimmed milk (Soy or rice milk will will do also)
    2 table spoons of good quality peanut butter
    2 table spoons of porridge oats (can vary this; how thick/smooth you like it)
    1 scoop of whey (optional - depends on your own training/diet preferences)

    Whizzz and drink :)
