Sorry about the lack of replies on here, hope you don't feel ignored!

On a very general note regarding mature students I wouldn't have a bad word to say about them. In my experience they get on well with the others in the class, regardless of age. You'll find this much easier in Science than you would in an Arts oriented course, I imagine, as you'll be paired/grouped up with others for labs etc.

Give me a shout if there's anything specific you'd like to know about the course, I'll be happy to inform you to the best of my knowledge.

Hope you're not too nervous about starting next month!!!:P

Thanks CJ, im compiling my list of questions and will post them all to you at the same time lol. Just kidding. But it's nice to know I could have a question looked at should one arise. Im not really nervous, as im raring to get started, but I am a little apprehensive. The unknown. Im sure i'm not alone there.

Oh just so you know, there's a TR071 thread here, which is pretty handy for asking course-specific questions.

    Hi Tachyon,

Had gone back to do leaving cert subjects this year and had an offer depending on my results. So I got the results I needed and got my offer this morning!

Wonder is it just us 2 matures going for TR071? lol

Hey Steve, congratulations! Did the FETAC 5 myself and got in based on that outcome. Have you decided which modules you are choosing?

Yea had decided when I applied for it lol. Hoping to go for Physics and Astrophysics so will need to take Physics, Maths and prob Chemistry. How bout u??

Still can't believe my LC results and the fact that I'm heading to Trinity!

Wanted to do Astrophysics too. Going to give the geology a try. Im really looking forward to it. So its maths/physics/geology here ;-) once im doing physics ill be happy.

Hey I've been doing science in Trinty for 7 years (nope didn't fail..doing a phd!)....I think the course has changed since I started but just to be aware with the subject choices you've picked you're options for 3rd and 4th year are either Geology or (Astro)Physics. Seems like you're set on doing something Physics related so sure you're grand.

Im doing a postgrad in geology and I teach 1st years. The course in geology for 1st year is very do-able. A lot of assessments but easy enough.

Hey thunderdog, nice to hear from you. I really wanted to do astrophysics but then after chatting with various researchers about job prospects in this area it made me feel a bit self indulgent in persuing it. Geology really appeals to me too though so im just going to enjoy the first couple of years and see where it goes. Looks like physical geography is the obvios choice for first term though.....strange that there is no first term geology module. Although the physical geography one looks great. Look forward to meeting you.

Yeah when I did Science the courses were organised differently....you had a choice of Biology, Chemistry, Physics A, Physics B (which counted as a half subject), Geography/Geology (as one subject), Maths, Maths methods (like Physics B counted as one subject). You picked 3 subjects unless you did Maths methods in which case you did 3.5. If you picked Maths Methods and Physics B technically you were doing 4 subjects.

One thing I'd mention about doing Maths is while it seems hard at the start most of the stuff they do in 1st you is basically recapping what you did in the LC. However being Trinity Maths lecturers they will overcomplicate things!

It took me months before I realised this.......so my advice is stick with it! Most people that did Maths in first year, came out with it as their highest mark! It was my highes mark by 26%!

Like the LC its either right/wrong so well worth doing if you did honours for LC.

Only downside to doing Maths in 1st/2nd year is that it really limits your options for 3rd/4th year. For examples I did Maths, Biology and Geog/Geol in 1st year. 2nd year I did Maths/Geog/Geol (geog & geol now as 2 separate subjects). Which meant I could only do Geol or Geog in 3rd and 4th year. Was ok for me though cos I knew I wanted to do Geology.

Perhaps if you're anyway unsure about what you want to do in 3rd year it you might be better off doing some other subject in second year apart from maths

    Hi Thunderdog,

Thanks for all the info :) I'm pretty set on doing Physics and Astrophysics so I'll have to do Physics and Maths for JF and SF. Will prob do Chemistry aswell. Have just done the LC higher level in Maths, Physics and Chemistry this year, found them pretty tough but got on way better than I expected so hopefully I'll manage :)

Yeah most to of the stuff you'll do in first year is a lot of what you did for LC (even if it looks completely different-have habit of explaining things differently!).

Think people get on grand in Physics. People seem to find Chemistry hard..has quite a high failure rate in 1st and 2nd year. I didn't do it myself but I think there is a bit of continuous assessment and a few small exams during the year so if you do grand in them you should be fine

I did chem in 1st and 2nd year and they do the LC material in maybe the first 2 weeks! The theory gets very tough but the practicals are great for bringing up your marks so make sure your practical write ups are PERFECT!
