This is gibberish to the majority of people.

If fact what was I thinking recommending that,

i'm sure your tv has a vga input,

just go from vga from laptop to vga on tv, and use a 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack for the sound

Just checked my tv manual,it says only digital output can be connected via DVI to HDMI cable.VGA connection is not supported.Lost the manual for my laptop, its a Dell Inspiron 1720 and I do not think there is a DVI connector on it???

OK, was having a look at this, the Dell only lists these ports
    Ports
    sv_clear_spacer.gifspacer.gifUSB 2.0 (5)
    Integrated 10/100 LAN (RJ45) and 56K Modem8 (RJ11)
    IEEE1394a
    8-in-1 Memory Card Reader
    VGA video output & S-Video
Stereo in, headphone/speaker out & Dual digital mics
    1 ExpressCard 54mm Slot

No DVI, that leaves S-Video to HDMI, there's no such Cable that I can find, S-video is analog and HDMI is digital so you need a Converter to sort out the audio/video signals, not cheap. There's a few different connection types here.

If it's just for movies you could get something like this.

Or ask Dr Green to tell you more about the hdmi pci card.

thats why you buy a laptop with HDMI.

USB to HDMI adaptors can be got, but expect €50-100 for one online.

S-Video to HDMI would not carry sound.
