Waterproof gear

Had a complete and utter soaking yesterday in Grange Castle. Had Glorious warm dry for 14 holes, then a monsoon. I doubt if any weather proof gear could have stood up to that downpour barring oil skins, but I'll need to get something to at least keep my underpants dry (not that I intend to start in pissing rain, but when your out your out) so what do you guys use. I was up in Halfpenny golf earlier and they had jackets at €150:eek: Does expensive golf wet gear actually keep you dry or like everything else,is it just a brand name your buying. What about the aldi or lidle specials occasionally, good stuff? Or is it a case of just using the stuff that camping shops sell. I realise that if you want breathable waterproof gear it's not going to be cheap, but there has to be reasonably priced gear out there somewhere, any tips?

I had this discussion with the pro at my club and he reckons in the long run you're better off buying the expensive stuff as the stuff is proper waterproof and it will last years and years. But no you are not just buying a brand, with the Galvin Green stuff for example you're buying a top quality product imo.

Then again I'm sure he had a potential sale in mind.

Think stuff made out of Gore Tex material are best when it comes to combining waterproof and breath-ability. But it's expensive  Really expensive.

I have a pair of aldi waterproof slacks. They are not very breathable so can get quite hot when wearing them but they do the job waterproof wise so they are acceptable considering the cost.

I think before the winter sets in I'm going to save my pennies and buy a set of Gore Tex stuff.

Save up for the Galvin Green - it's amazing. Have mine now for 4 or 5 years and is still as new. Have had some mammoth soakings and it has really stood the test. It is also very very light / easy to move in.

Pretty stylish too - hence I am saving up for another jacket for casualwear off the course.

    Where would one get them?

+1 on the Galvin Green gear. Brilliant stuff.
Yes it's expensive, but just think of it as an investment. It'll last for years.
Can be bought from any of the good online golf shops, or in McGuirks.

Thanks for the help guys, once payday rolls around I think I'll get myself a jacket. The fact it'll last so long makes it a good investment imo.

4 hours of solid rain on Saturday and was dry as a bone afterwards....now the clubs and the bag were soaked but rain gloves solve that. Didnt even use the umbrella, rock on Galvin Green.

Bought Galvin Green jacket (€220) trousers (€180), a few weeks ago used them for the first time in Saturday's downpour. Stayed bone dry, very impressed.

Got a suit (jacket and pants) of Hi-Tec in Nevada Bob's Cork for €99.
Tested it out during the intermittent monsoons in Cork yesterday and I was bone dry afterwards. Worth the money.

Bought a cheap set of waterproofs for 35 euro, stayed bone dry when I could be arsed taking them out of the bag and putting them on.

Bought a 2nd set of Kartel waterproofs on sale at 75 euro, stayed bone dry when I could be arsed taking them out of the bag and putting them on.

Bought some galvin green waterproofs for ridiculious money, stayed bone dry when I could be arsed taking them out of the bag and putting them on.

    Very impressed with the lot.

Why did you buy the Galvin Green gear if the Kartel gear was doing the job?? Fashion? Too much cash sloshing around in your wallet? Impulse buyer syndrome?

Thanks for the replies, just under 500 balloons for wets is out of my league at the mo,I could join a club for that. The Hi-tec at €100 or so sounds good if I can get them.

Well, just ordered this bad boy:

    http://www.golfstoreeurope.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=675

Took a good long while before I could click to confirm the order, it's an insane amount of money really, but hopefully it'll last me a good number of years.

Zak Flaps. Is the Galvin Green a tight fitting? I have water proof gear myself and i find the jacket gets in the way when i am driving or playing iron shots.

It's just right for me Vanbis. Not too tight, not too baggy. But if you're thinking of purchasing, best try them first as they are expensive.

What you'll find with GG tops is that they have velcro straps on the sides that will tighten the jacket around waist & stomach area, so that no bagginess, so should not get in the way of your swing as much. Still obviously better when not wearing the top, but not too bad either.

The trousers are very comfy, I got the GG Axton trousers, and you wouldn't even know that you had them on, very comfy.

Woudl also definitely recommend the GG Abel Goretex baseball hat, very light, obviously waterproof.

I bought mine for considerably cheaper on Fleabay, but need tobe careful, as plenty of fakes etc on there.
