Region specific disc drives?

    A simple question I think:

If I buy a laptop in the USA it will be Region 1 for DVD and/or Blu-Ray.
Is there a way to change the drive setting to Region 2?

Prices for what I want are a lot better over there. Just don't want to be stuck with a useless disc drive.

I think you get 4 nor 5 goes at changing the region.

Prior to the 4th or 5th change you get a warning that the region will be set to the current region being used.

Just play the discs from your current region and you'll be ok.

Many DVD disc drives can be made region free

I'd just download VLC. It's a good video player and it ignores DVD regions

You can change it in Device Manager. 4 times.

    Does VLC play BLU-RAYs?

I'd only be googling to find out if it does. I don't have a blu-ray player on my PC. MKV's and any HD content i've downloaded works fine.

The last time I checked, once the files were on the computer it could play them but they were still working on playing an actual disc.

    Must check again.

    Thanks for the info.
Am going to pick it up over there and while not essential, the ability to play Region 1 DVDs would be helpful. US$800 feels a lot better than E800.

Some drive models (not all) have a hacked firmware which can make it region free, I'm not sure if this applies to blu ray playback devices, check out www.rpc1.org for more details
