Had got a quote from a shop on Baggot St. and they wanted €69 and €79 respectively for 320gb and 500gb Buffalo ones.

Oh and 1TB Western Digital ones are €125.50 + delivery on Expansys.ie !

ANy one know what the spec of the drive is.

Particularly the spec of the interface.

This would be a cheap way to upgrade the hard disk in a laptop if it had the correct interface.

I don't have a link to hand but I think I read in the reviews on amazon that it doesn't have a sata interface to use in a laptop or recover data if the usb connection breaks.

You cant use this in side a laptop if you take it out if the caseing the as, Western Digital bypassed the standard SATA II circuitry and built a USB connection directly into the 2.5in internal hard drive. Its a real pitty as ive got a laptop that can take 2 drives and was thing of buying 2 of them.

Thanks for the replys, last time I upgraded the laptop I got a drive out of an enclosure. Great as you can connect it to the PC in the enclosure to clone the existing drive.

Old drive then goes into the enclosure.

Got 1 in currys today, has anybody else noticed a vibration coming from there's? Mine does and im thinking of bringing it back for a replacement.
There is a few complaints on the WD forum about this also.
And worryingly there are a lot of complaints about the drive dying on amazon.

USB Micro-B connector hardwired onto the controller board, with the onboard PCB chipset providing a SATA to USB3 bridge.

Good article on the internal drives and the data encryption they use here.

There were plenty in PC World and Currys in Carrickmines when I was there today. 1TB was €10 cheaper than the 500GB

I got one in Airside today, €65, getting cheaper

I've been doing a back-up since about 6 o'clock and it's only just over half way through now at 9.

I think I've about 300gig of stuff on my laptop but I still reckon that's very slow. Can any techies out there tell me if that sounds right??

USB isn't asynchronous- it starts off fast and then slows right down (this is where Firewire- which may be slower comes into its own- its slower- but its constant). File size is also relevant here- large quantities of small files will copy/backup a hell of a lot faster on USB than a single large file even if there is an identical gross size.........

Also- are you on a USB 3, 2 or even 1 connection? With some older chipsets, devices revert back to USB1 speeds for hostpowered devices, irrespective of the relative capabilities of either the socket or the device.

Asking whether your 150-170Gb taking 3 hours is normal- isn't a simple yes/no answer- its certainly plausible- whether its satisfactory or not is an entirely different matter........

I was thinking of picking up one of these online. What's the playback rate like? Is it fast enough to play a movie from without skipping and buffering every few seconds?

If there is stuttering/buffering- its at the receiver end, not the hard-drive end. Its extremely unlikely though.
