I wouldn't call what I have a fear, but I HATE it when people squeeze them or when I see my nephews trying to bounce on them. I think it's the pop I don't like! Gives me shivers

In what way do you have a fear of balloons? Is it the fact they might burst at any moment or is it the feel/touch of them?

My mother hates balloons and always wanted rid of them when they were in the house. She saw a child choke (and possibly died IIRC) when a balloon burst in their face & they inhaled a piece of balloon material which got caught in their airway. She can't relax around them and prefers we don't bring them into the house.

I think those anecdotes are around with years, my mother also knew of someone who nearly chocked on a piece of baloon when it burst in their face.

I would like to know, as well, is it the fear of the baloon popping or the actual baloon and does the fear transfer to, say, a blown up plastic bag, etc.

I don't mind balloons but my mum HATES them...especially the squeaky noise they make when handled and if you squeeze one and dig your fingers in as it squeaks and creaks, she has to leave the room.

I think it's partly the noise giving her the cringes and also the expectation of getting a fright when it pops. Not sure what might help - perhaps get used to handling them yourself, maybe get some sausage balloons (the type you can make balloon animals with) to see just how flexible they actually are and see if you can get used to handling?

    All the best

I don't mind balloons I just hate when people are squeezing them around me. My nephew was given a balloon the other week and he was bouncing on it and I was squirming around my chair with my hands over my ears because I knew it was going to pop.
