I dropped my Dane Elec So Speaky media player drive on this stairs earlier and now it's not working. :( I didn't even drop it that far, two steps at most, was carrying too much in one go, lesson learned. Anyway, when I turn on the power I get a low pitch hum/beep.

I presume it's completely fecked. Only got it a few months ago.

Probably f*cked alright I'd say. Hardrives don't like being dropped at all, not even a little bit.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Will have a look around for something to replace it with. Oh well. Will check the HE forums.

I'd recommend the WD-TV. Doesn't have its own hd so can be dropped! Mine works very well and plays nearly everything.

I've seen it recommended a few times. Do you mean this one or this? Don't have a HD TV here or anything with HDMI, so won't be able to take advantage of that side, but am more interested in the formats. Would prefer to be able to drop files onto it, but could probably work around that.

    Yeah, the second one
Pity about not having a HD tv but no matter. You can stll drag and drop wih this. Just get yourself a portable 2.5" hd. You can plug two different hds into the wd-tv.

So, if you have the portable one the media player will feed off it? Have a spare external HD lying around somewhere, some stuff on it, so perhaps it will do. It's a little bit old.

Any external hard drive will work. The benefit about the portable is that its powered by USB so no need for an extra power cable. They tend to be quieter than mains powered drives as well.

    +1 for the WD TV.
I've one of these for almost three years.
It plays avi, mkv, vob etc.
    It won't play wma files.

    Fazer6.

If you have an external harddrive you could always take your harddrive out and replace it with this one, might save you a few quid as harddrives are expensive!

I recently upgraded from the WD TV to the Boxee Box

Waaaaay better than the WDTV, you can download the pc version for free is you want to try it out.

Went for the WDTV in the end. I've not watched a full programme on it yet, but so far, so good. :)

I don't have the right type of screwdriver to check the innards of the HD I dropped.

Hmm, I was wondering about something like this. If I could remove the damaged one and replace it with something similar. The one that's bunched is quite large and I'd need to ensure any replacement would slot in in the same way. No real need for it now I've something else, but perhaps an idea.
