Is this his second crash in his F1?

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-14414889

Actor Rowan Atkinson is in hospital after being injured in a car crash in Cambridgeshire.
    _54432005_rowan.gif
Rowan Atkinson drove a McLaren F1 super car to a
party held by the Prince of Wales in 1998

The Blackadder star suffered a minor shoulder injury when the car he was driving hit a tree and lamppost and caught fire.

It is understood the crash happened on the A605 at Haddon near Peterborough at 19:30 BST on Thursday.

Media reports said he walked from the McLaren F1 super car and waited with a motorist until an ambulance arrived.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to put out the fire.

A spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews brought the fire under control by 8.13pm. They made the vehicle safe and used one hose reel to put out the fire.

"There was one casualty but he was not trapped."

East of England Ambulance Service said a man was taken to Peterborough City Hospital with "a minor shoulder injury" following the crash.

Atkinson achieved fame through BBC shows Not The Nine O'Clock News and Blackadder, before gaining international recognition in Mr Bean, in which his hapless character drives an old Mini.

I'd assume that it has something to do with the temperature. Probably close to freezing in that pic.

Didn't he recently say on Top Gear he had put up relatively little mileage on it?

I always thought he drove an old red mini!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

According to Jalopnik, the British newspapers are overplaying this and using Twitter as a source. The car isn't as bad as people make out by all accounts. Some reports on UK papers said the car burst into flames, when it only had a small fire. Atkinson's said to have a small shoulder injury and will be released from hospital later today.

    Nicked from somebody's Facebook:

"Rowan Atkinson has been injured after crashing his McLaren F1 supercar in Cambridgeshire. Paramedics at the scene said his face was hideously disfigured, luckily for him though his only injury was to his shoulder."

How many crashes has he had now in supercars on the public road? If he wants to drive like a lunatic, he should take his aggression to the track. Feckin' muppet.

Didn't used to race Aston Martins?

I have a mate who still works for Zytek Racing in Derby (I think)... apparently Atkinson used to come in there. Notorious tool.

I was refering to the newspapers' attitude - sorry if that wasn't clear. :o

I thought he drove a Reliant Robin?

It was a mini - as shown above by Standard Toaster. The Reliant Robin was his nemesis.

Just ask any child of the 70's or 80's and we'll fill you in.

With 600 odd BHP it's not hard to lose the rear end without driving aggressively. TBH, his last accident in this was back in 1999 (So the articles tell me) - 12 years between accidents in a hypercar is pretty good going.

I'd say if he wrote a big enough cheque to Ron Dennis that it could be rebuilt or he could always get one of these if he still wanted a Mclaren

When a car's worth that much it's almost never beyond economical repair.

Good point. Anyone remember the Bugatti dug up from the bottom of an Italian lake after 80 years? There was nothing left of it but some rust. And yet it was completely restored :D

So he only had 2 crashes? I thought there were others? If there was only 2, I overreacted. Sorry Mr A. :)

We don't know the circumstances of the crash so maybe we should leave hanging Rowan Atkinson till a later date. He is a more than competent driver, certainly not a clown as is borne out by the fact that he is the fastest Star to go around the Top Gear track. This of course is no reflection on how he drives on public roads.

He had an accident with the F1 where he rear ended an Austin Metro, the photo is in a post above, it cost near to £100,000 at the time to fix it. While the F1 in the photo seems to have its rear axle ripped out I would think the fire damage caused to the car is more serious. However as F1's currently go for ca €3.5m it may still be worth it to fix it. His car is chassis nr 61, the 49th built (of 64 road cars), delivered in 1997.

Its not known how many F1s are still on the road. Bernd Pischetsrieder, the former head of BMW and later VW crashed his the day after it was delivered. It was written off after he crashed it on a minor road. Although the car somersaulted several times none of the three people in the car were hurt.

A couple more example of the strength of the car are that when a test driver crashed the car in Namibia at supposedly 150mph, the car rolled several times but the driver was unhurt. Along with this the car that was used for the official crash test into a wall was started up after crash and driven away, so I guess its possible Atkinsons car may still be salvageable.

Either way I wish him a good recovery.

The photo below was taken a few months ago at the F1 meeting in Woking, supposedly the biggest ever meeting of F1's so far. Atkinsons car is at the front.

    Not quiet,

the blue crash test car didn't have an engine fitted at the time but had a weight block to simulate the engine as it was thought too expensive and unnecessary to fit and engine however after the crash test and the strength which the carbon fiber shell demonstrated it was realised they missed out on a major publicity stunt because if an engine had of been fitted the car could of driven away perfectly apart from the front end damage.

    It's code name was XP2

It would of been the first road car to do so AFAIK

    Here is the video

How the guy is let walk freely I'll never know.

Ye, I was actually impressed with his lap on Top Gear a few weeks ago, nice driving, and he was faster by a good bit. (1"42.2 V 1"42.8)

He's also races a classic Ford Falcon.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

I don't see what everyone's problem is here.

The guy in my mind is a bit of a Maverick. He buys all of this expensive high performance metal and actually uses it as it was meant to be used. That F1 has high enough mileage if I remember correctly.

Most other people buy it and leave to gather dust in a shed where the public and car lovers/spotters never get a chance to see it on the open road.

It's a shame it's crashed but it least it got used properly unlike 90% of these special cars
