I personally think, if we can keep everyone fit, get that new striker and get Gomes back to the way he played 09/10.. We will definitely be back in the top 4.

    One can only hope!

I think it will be between us goons and pool for 4th spot. Of course if we keep all our top players fit and in form aswell as maybe a top striker we will be a force to be reckoned with. COYS

6th maybe. If we get a decent striker in we might challenge for 4/5th. HR doesn't fill me with confidence, he just better field the youths in the EL.

I think, as it stands, we'll do well to finish in 6th. We are no better or worse than last season, but all other teams around us have strengthened. It's a familiar story really. We got lucky with VDV last season - had he not come at the last minute, we wouldn't have competed at all.

I am really struggling to see how we still haven't done a single bit of first team business, in or out, with just over a week to go to the start of the new season. It is absolutely baffling. Whatever about buying the right player, surely the team could get rid of those not needed? Even one of them! The silly thing is that we will start the season with the same players we had last season, the same players that failed to get us 4th, and the same players that will fail again unless improved upon, particularly in the striking department. Even if we buy someone now, he's unlikely to start the first game against Everton.

Whether we finish the transfer window with the same players is another matter, but the bottom line is that if we don't strengthen we will not finish in the top 4. Arsenal, despite their frailties, are a better team than us. Liverpool - well they're a bit of an unknown, but they are certainly building a good squad and if they click will do well.

    So, in conclusion :D, I think we'll finish in 5th or 6th.

I think we will finish 5/6th unless we get a top class striker and hold onto modric and are a bit luckier with injuries than we were last season (that's alot of ands). I think City, United and Chelsea are all ahead of us quality wise and Liverpool have been doing the right thing and investing which worries me.
I think Liverpool and Arsenal are our biggest rivals for 4th and to be honest Liverpool have been going the right way about it whilst Arsenal are in decline but still probably a bit ahead of us but that could change by the end of the transfer window.

I do not agree fully with you here, just because Liverpool spent alot of money on overhyped British players does not mean that they will automatically be better than us this season. I still believe we have a better team and squad than Liverpool.

We have been better than Liverpool for the last two seasons and I think we can finish above them again this season, even with all the players they have signed I still man for man that we have a better squad than them with maybe the exception of Suarez.

Just noticed we aren't even in the poll for 1st over in the premier league winners thread which is bull**** considering there are five teams in it and we finished fourth and fifth the last two respective seasons. Until we strengthen we will not be taken seriously i suppose.

IMO we still have great players (and potentially the best midfield in the league) but we must strengthen in our weak spots i.e. a striker and a CB to mount any sort of challenge for 4th and above.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 960 ✭✭✭oppiuy

We really finished the season poorly last year and still were only a couple of points off 4th. Im not too worried if im honest but i do think we need to **** out Crouch and Defoe and replace with a foreign player with skill and intelligence. Pav should be given a run.

City has spent millions but where will they all play, will they gel. Tevez was a monster for them last year and he's on the way out. Liverpool will be poor imo. Theyve wasted a lot of money on players in the calibre of Jenas.

Chelsea havent really improved, they will be strong as always but are the legs still there?

The goons will be alright, a bit weak at the back, should have won the league last year but threw it away.

We have a tough few games to start off with and that should tell us where we stand but i think we can push for third

If the squad has the right attitude there's no reason why they can't win the bloody thing.

This comes from the top down however and I can't see Arry being positive which will seep down into the players.

If the attitude is right we'll finish 2nd, if its bad we'll be comfortable in 5th or 6th but well off 4th.

We had a better team and squad than most teams last year but we still lost and drew against alot of those teams.
My fear is that Liverpool will have more confidence this season, maybe not a better squad, but they improved alot towards the end of last season and have been investing in their squad.
We on the other hand had a terrible end of season and have invested almost nothing so far this season. I think that if we do not invest in certain areas of our squad before september that we will fail to finish above Liverpool next season.

    6th looks most likely
    5th is very possible
    top 4 is boxed off

Who is the 4th along with mancs x 2 and Chelsea ? Liverpool or Arsenal I assume ? Fair enough the goons have finished above us for a long while now but if they lost fabregas and nasri, it would make it interesting !

6th place and thats IF we get the existing strikers to start scoring again.
Lets face it - Bale is a known quatity now and wont be able to trouble defenses the way he did last season.

VDV had a great few months but there's a reason RM got rid and it wasnt too long ago that we all said he upset the balance of the team.

Even if we bring in one or 2 players bwtween now and the weekend I still cant see beyond 6th unless those players were real superstars like Sneijder or Kaka or ribery or similar, which of course wont happen in a month of sundays.

I'm not too worried about liverpool - sure their form was title winning in the 2nd half of the season but we beat them comfortably just before the end of the season.

The 'new' big four and anyone one of about 4 other teams (incl liverpool)

My point is that there are 3-4 other times we could finish above us in 5th place, based on our form in the 2nd half of last season.

liverpool have spent loads but on the wrong players, they need defensive players.same with the gooners who as of yet havent improved their squad at all,i personally think the title will be a fight between the 2 manchester teams, with utd winning,i dont think chelsea will do much but will still quailify for the CL.
so where does that leave us?we still need a striker and a settled CB pairing,(i can see gallas just play league games)if we can sort out the annoying losses and draws to relagation candidates and keep up our fantastic home form then CL is on the cards again, hopefully in 3rd place.............fingers crossed.

5th is the most we can acheive. Cant see arsenal not getting fourth. Chel, utd and city wont be touchable. Liverpool have bought themselves a problem. So hoping that constant rotation and the fact they dont have bought every british Midfeilder around will cause them problems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 912 ✭✭✭endabob1

Despite the fact the I adore Luka if he's sold and replaced with a Drogba like centre forward we would have a much better balanced side and maybe capable of knocking Cith or the goons from the top 4.
If he's sold on 31st of August (which I suspect he will be) and we start the season with the current striker pool I fear for us, 6th would be the absolute pinnacle of our ambitions

has anyone else noticed that media outlets like sky sports dont even see spurs competing for the top 4. this is frustrating considering we finished relatively high in the league and had a great CL run. on the front page they showed players from 5 of last seasons top 6. guess which team was left out :(

Yeah I have to admit to being really pee'd off with the front page of Sky Sports.com - no sign of Spurs, but Liverpool are there?! WTF!!

I think this is brilliant news. No expectations = no pressure. Let them write us off, first time in what, 5/6 seasons we're not tipped to be challenging the big four. We'll slip in under the radar

I think if we hang onto Luka, get in Diarra and sign a 20+ goals a season striker, we can come 3rd/4th. If not, then I reckon 6th at best (but hopefully at least the semi's in the Europa and FA cup)

The only semi Spurs will get this season is looking at Robbie's missus on the beach in LA.

I think we have a great chance to finish in the top four. Look at last season, we could have easily got 3rd had we not dropped points late in the season against the likes of West Ham, WBA, Blackpool, Wolves etc.

Man United are a lock for a top four spot.

Chelsea should challenge at the top but with a new boss and an ageing squad they could struggle as they did for about 3 months in the middle of last season.

City are predicted to push on and cement their top four place but Tevez was so important to them last season.. his goals and influence will not be easily replaced. Kun Aguero could be fantastic but maybe he will need a season to find his feet.

Arsenal are so reliant on van Persie it's unreal. With Fabregas and Nasri heading for the exit they are nothing to be scared of.

I'm not convinced by this Liverpool revolution. They have signed some very good Premier League players but they have plenty of weaknesses too.

We have a very deep squad of quality players. Even if we sign no more players we are in with a great shout of 4th. Having Ledley fit for 20-25 games would be a massive boost. Surely our strikers can produce more than they did last season? I think we'll get 4th ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,778 ✭✭✭Big Pussy Bonpensiero

Rio and Vidic went off injured vs WB, Rio should definitely be out against us. Rafael is out for 10 weeks apparently and Evra didnt feature at all today, so we could facing a second string defence from United. Would still be very strong tho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46 spurskiely

Can easily see us up there for 4th at the business end of season . Ok last nights performance against Utd wasn,t great but not getting 3 points at Old Trafford hasn,t exactly cost us down through the years . C O Y S .!!!!!!!!!!!

So lads, has anyone changed their minds since the seasons started? I think top 4 is a definite with the way we are playing. Dare I say it we might even get top 3?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,153 ✭✭✭everdead.ie

I certainly think we have gone from fighting for fourth to fighting a little higher up for third I wouldn't say we are challenging for the title unless we are this close in feburary/march but annoying none of last season seem likely to drop many points so far this season at all.

The most important thing this year is the few draws we have had.
That and we have taken tonnes of points of the bottom teams

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,299 ✭✭✭BERBA

at the start of season if you had said to me that we would have had 10 wins out of 13 , i would have said there and then we'd be top and not sitting 7 points off the pace , city have had some start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,108 ✭✭✭✭2nd Row Donkey

True. City's results have been awesome.
I havent looked at the stats but I imagine that 31 points from 13 games would have been enough for us to be top in previous PL seasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,778 ✭✭✭Big Pussy Bonpensiero

I'd still snap your hand off for fourth. The inevitable injury to RvP doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon, and until then Arsenal will win more than they lose. Liverpool seem to have their act together, and they do have a very solid squad. I still think Chelsea are a cert for top 4, regardless of their current form. We do have a great chance, our major problem will be fatigue I reckon, but this really is our best chance in a long time to do something more than just getting top 4. Nervous times await! Onwards and upwards, COYS!

Fatigue should not be a major issue as we are now out of all cups apart from FA cup which is played on non premier league weekends anyway. Also am not so sure Chelsea are dead certs unless they some serious business in January.

Chelsea were top this time last season after 14 games with 28 points:eek:

we have 31 points from 13 games this season yet still 7 behind :(

Injuries will be pivotal to where we finish, like what KingdomYid has said above fatigue should not now be a factor. Lucas will be a big loss to Liverpool as he was the mainstay of their midfield up to now, Chelsea are in a bad run of form though you would think they will be there or thereabouts as will be le arse depending on when RVP has his annual crockfest of course... i think we will get top 4 though ive a sneaking suspicion we could do very well in the FA cup, a semi final at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,951 ✭✭✭SuprSi

It's so difficult to call, but I guess that's because it's still early in the season. I think it's inevitable that we'll have a slump at some stage and how high we finish will depend on how long that slump lasts and also how strong we finish the season. On paper we have a much better last 8 fixtures than in the last 2 seasons, and this could be crucial.

As already mentioned injuries could be a big thing. If Adebayor is out for any length of time, we'll be back to the strikeforce we had last season which wasn't good enough. Also, if we lose Bale or Lennon we will lose that pace and fluidity that we've had all season.

I'd love to think that we could finish 3rd, and in fairness on current form you would have to say it's possible, but the end of the season is still a long way away!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,395 ✭✭✭Hatch99

Fourth and everything above would be a bonus. Man City have the players and are a huge force, chelsea and arsenal are improving. Man U defence is poor lads and I can see them going down the pecking order.

Their last five league results have been 1-0, 1-0, 1-0, 1-1, 1-0. And that goal conceded was a penalty that never was.. I'd take that kind of poor defence any day.

I'd take 4th. I think we are capable of higher and I'd like to aim for 1st but I'd take 4th no question.

A lot depends on the 6 game run starting at the end of January.

    22 Jan Man City (A)
    31 Jan Wigan (H)
    06 Feb Liverpool (A)
    11 Feb Newcastle (H)
    26 Feb Arsenal (A)
    03 Mar Man Utd (H)

I'm gonna plump for 3rd behind the Manchester clubs. AVB might get sacked at Chelski and cause enough disarray for them to finish below us and RvP is waaay overdue a 3 month injury layoff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 284 ✭✭Wendell Gee

If we can keep the run going for a couple of more games, we will go into the Chelsea match with all the pressure on them. 6 points from Stoke and Sunderland will be tough, especially with O Neill in situ. What price Pulis plays Palacios and Crouch against us?
Anyway, if we could get those points, Chelsea will come to the Lane needing a win, for the first time in four years -since we beat them with Robbie eating a succession of right backs, and backed it up with a league cup win. United are suffering injuries, and Citeh have the CL test, a few tough league matches, and three cup games in rapid succession against Manyoo and Liverpool. We go up there on a serious revenge mission in the middle of all that. Don't forget we owe them for taking our CL place. We were better than them last season at the lane, and started well up there until Crouch's OG.
We need to buy a striker before that game if we're going to at all, because Adebayor is ineligible. It could be that a win up there would open up the title race.
I remember 1984-85. We were the team of all talents, having added John Cheidozie and Clive Allen to the team that had won the UEFA cup. We beat Everton 4-1 on the opening day of the season -they became champions. For Peter Reid , see Scotty Parker. Why not dream? If we can't dream when they've a record as a team (that is, since Parker and Adebayor came in and King got a run of games) of played 11 won 10 drew 1 lost 0, what's the point of being a football fan at all.

Arse, I assumed we played Utd in Jan seeing as we played them so early in the 1st half of the season. The month of Janurary is important too - what with the game in hand vs everton and the Man city game. If we dont take max points from those games then we might already have dropped out of the chasing pack before the wigan to Utd fixture run.

Saw on another site that Henderson and Carroll cost liverpool considerably more than our current first 11!

    Carroll = £35m, Henderson = £20m. Total = £55m

    Friedel - Free
    Kyle Walker - 4m
    Benoit Assou Ekotto - 3m
    King - Free
Kaboul - £5m (Think he was more, but Pompey owed us money and we only paid £5m)
    Lennon - £700k
    Bale - £8m
    Modric - £16.5m
    Parker - £5m
    Van der Vaart - £8m
    Adebayor - loan
    Total = £50.2m.

Anyone wish to correct the transfer fees?
