    Hi!

Was listening to the radio and the usual crap - dole scrounger blah blah public sector blah blah sad story about people not having money to buy castles etc blah blah and then they said people on the doll won`t work in hospitality - like as waitresses, kithen staff, maids etc

So my question - would you work as a waiter/waitress/kitchen staff etc?
    If not - why not?

It was never a question with me. Nothing wrong with being a waitress or anything - did it before and if anyone will give me a job I`ll happily do it again. Surely other people couldn`t have gotten that stupid and snobby particular?

I think you will find when waiters etc actually earn more than the dole, people will take the jobs

Most places wont hire overqualified people. Hiring fulltime staff is a costly thing and if theyre just riding out the recession, it aint in employers interest to hire them

That said, if the above was not an issue and i was unemployed, id of course do it. I dont get people who choose not to work regardless. How the frig do you spend your days, seriously.

Not trying to offend ya but to be fair who wants to be a waiter or waitress.

Id bet a high percentage of people take them jobs looking to move on and hopefully better job later on.

This. I've had interviews with places who have expressed 'concern' that i'm overqualified. I didn't get the jobs in the end. The other end of the spectrum is that you do have the necessary experience, but it's not exactly in the area they have a vacancy. So, you may have worked in retail, but have you sold scarves before? No? You won't get the job. Employers can be picky in a recession.

Didn't you hear? People on the dole make shedloads of money! You can make 60,000 euro a year! And so on.

I couldn't be a waiter due to my intense hatred of people, I'd happily do menial work like washing dishes or something though.

Then again if it was a choice between waitering and starving, well then I wouldn't really have a choice.

To try and prove what point? I didnt make any point!

I simply know a fair few people on the dole with rent allowance.

I know people on the dole with jack russels but they certainly don't hand out puppies at the labour exchange.

http://debates.oireachtas.ie/dail/2011/07/05/00252.asp#N2 Less than 1/4 of all people on the dole and thats not to say they`re on the dole - counted in that figure would be asylum seekers, people in receipt of a disability payment, supplementary welfare allowance and single mother allowance - theres no break down of figures available. So if we assume an even breakdown of figures -
96,809/5(no. groups in receipt) = 19362 (dole group)
; 19362/447900 = 4.2% of people on he dole in receipt of rent supplement.

Just sick of the "bash people on the dole" thing, especially when the basis of it isn`t even correct.

I didn’t bash anyone - Ive had to claim myself from time to time and i appreciate the fact that should things go bad where im at now, i always have a safety net to fall back on while i get back on my feet again.

I simply pointed out that in cases, the math isn’t as simple as the dole vs. minimum wage.

its not worth some peoples time getting a job,as pointed out there's supplements on welfare which would cover more than min wage job.

I'm sure alot of people who want to actually work are now in same place as those who didn't work during the good times and are still claiming.

Fault lies in the welfare and tax system.

I think there's a lot of Irish people who wouldn't work in hospitality, at least not in their own town, maybe even country.

Look at the amount of people from other EU countries that work in that sector in Ireland, their not doing it for less money either as some people always go on about, their working in those jobs because they were willing to do it where as Irish weren't.

If the Irish are abroad they would work those kind of jobs just to stay in that country like in Australia, Irish people going out to work in the countryside something the majority of them wouldn't do if they were back in Ireland

Care to elaborate? I don`t see what supplements your talking about. As I pointed out earlier less than 5% of social welfare recipients are in receipt of rent supplement what other supplements are there?
