Planning permission is needed to sell cars from a premises, I don't have a link to the specifics.

Cost wise insurance for repairs and servicing may be more expensive than sales only I think. Lots of sales only folk get part-time sales only with no premises cover, ie just the cars are covered.

To get the garage code from shannon, you need a ratable valuation on your premises, in other words you will need to be paying commercial rates.
Its not quite necessary to have planning for purpose of car sales, your local authority may be happy enough to extract rates from you.
Once your issued the code, then you apply to the local authority and they visit the premises and ok the trade plate application.

@plug just for a guideline my insurance this year is 2600, broken down as 1200 road (2 of us), rest is wshop/public liab/defective workmanship, vehicles in care etc, thats with no sales.

unless the premise already has permission for car sales ;)
but as mentioned, if your gona sell from a private shed or home or similar, you wiil need to apply for change of use.

Ok but once i have all the things done that i mentioned at the start, am i a registered motor dealer, or is there a 'body' you need to registered with to be an 'authorised motor dealer' ? i dont mean simi! Its just ive heard of people mention 'get your dealer number' is that just to do with the trade plates?

Also from my experience with planning permission it can be a very expensive process. to get planning permission to sell cars from a yard/unit ... is it a long/costly process??

    Thanks for your help guys!
