Central Locking From Key On E39

Friend of mine just bought an '02 E39. When he got it first the central locking worked fine from both keys, then only one, and now none - i.e. it's not the battery in the key.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks! :)

this should work. ive done it a couple of times on my 02' E39

1,Sit in car with all doors & windows shut.
2,Switch ignition on to position 1 then switch off & remove key within 10 seconds.
3,Hold down the unlock button & press the lock button 3 times.
4,Release both buttons & if accepted the locks will cycle "lock/unlock"
5,Do this for each key that you have but WITHOUT putting the key in the ignition "STEP 3 ONWARDS" within 30 seconds.
6,Once all done switch ignition on then off.
    7,Check all keys work ok.

Also, on the newer type key from around 2000 on, there is no battery in the key, it is charged while in the ignition, so spare keys will often stop working if not used and need to be programmed like the previous post.
