RTÉ Sport is set to broadcast a host of major sporting events in HD this month with live coverage of GAA, soccer and rugby fixtures. RTÉ Two HD on SAORVIEW, Ireland's free digital television service, will show 14 Irish and International sports broadcasts in High Definition including the All Ireland Championship semi-finals, UEFA Champions League Play-Offs and Ireland's Rugby World Cup warm up games against France.

As the GAA Championships culminate, RTÉ Sport will broadcast nine individual matches in HD this month featuring teams from 11 different counties all available on RTÉ Two HD on SAORVIEW. The HD broadcasts will begin with the hugely anticipated All Ireland Senior Football quarter final between Dublin and Tyrone this Saturday 6th August. Fans will also be able to enjoy all the action in HD every Sunday in August from Croke Park with each of the minor and senior All Ireland Football and Hurling semi finals live on RTÉ Two HD on SAORVIEW.

The new soccer season kicks off this August and RTÉ Sport will bring some of the best European action to fans in HD. There will be live HD coverage of the UEFA Champions League Play-Offs on the 17th and 24th August on RTÉ Two HD on SAORVIEW, as some of the best teams in Europe look to earn their place in the elite stage of greatest club competition in the world. In addition the UEFA Super Cup will see Champions League winners Barcelona take on Europa Cup holders Porto on 26th August live on RTÉ Two HD on SAORVIEW.

With the 2011 Rugby World Cup only weeks away Ireland will play a series of warm up games this August. RTÉ Sport will broadcast Ireland's tests with France in both Bordeaux and the Aviva Stadium live in HD on RTÉ Two HD on SAORVIEW on the 13th and 20th August.
Clíona O'Leary, Deputy Head of Television Sport, RTÉ said: "This month sees a packed calendar of sporting fixtures for RTÉ and we are very excited to be able to bring a growing number of fixtures to fans in HD on Saorview. The picture and sound quality offered by HD is superb and our coverage will put sports fans right at the heart of the action."
All HD broadcasts will be available on RTÉ Two HD, the first Irish free-to-air HD service now available on SAORVIEW.

Wont be much rugby though as they seem to be only covering 1 game in the first 5 rounds of the Pro12. Pretty poor show that may as well have left it with Satanta and TG4.

Has it been announced what channels are showing what?

That list only states host broadcasters. RTÉ and TG4 will later decide what away games they are covering. You can guarentee that one of them (likely RTÉ) will cover Ospreys v Leinster, for example. It was the same last season.

Also to note, there is no host broadcaster for games in Italy, and for that reason, and until that changes, no Aironi or Treviso home games will be on television at all - anywhere - as indeed has been the case since Dahalia TV went into liquidation last February.

Now I'd love to know why an Irish broadcaster has still to pick up the rights for Ireland v Scotland on Saturday.

Generally speaking RTÉ will take on Munster and Leinster matches while Connacht and Ulster matches are on TG4 with Ulster matches also on BBCNI.

I assume this is because RTÉ is based in Leinster, BBC in Ulster and TG4 in Connacht with Munster being given to RTÉ as TG4 cover Ulster.

Is BBC NI covering the Ireland V Scotland match?

BBC Sport is covering it centrally, its on BBC Two accross the UK. So yes, it will be on BBC Two NI (thankfully).

Regarding the provinces, I wouldn't quite put it as simplistic as you have put it. BBC Northern Ireland are host broadcaster for all of Ulster's home games so they have them all and will cover the lines share of Ulster away games. And TG4 did cover more than their fair share of Connacht games.

But Leinster and Munster fans both had the same complaint - basically, that TG4 was covering too many of their team's games and the other team's games were being favoured by RTÉ. This tended to arise more when their team happened to be on TG4 on that particular weekend. I think it ended up being much of muchness to be honest - I know the Leinster v Munster game in Aviva Stadium was on TG4 and the return leg in Thomond Park was on RTÉ, so this would seem to indicate there is some sort of logic or formula on how they are splitting the coverage of Leinster and Munster. My personal suspcision is that if it is not 50-50 it is probably close to it, but I haven't done an imperical study to prove this.

That's not how it was last year at all, a lot of Leinster and Munster games were on TG4.

For sure. Leinster v Munster was on TG4 for example.

Prehaps rte and tg4 split the munster game, but i am fairly sure that i used the word generally.

    Bbc ni - ulster
    Rte - leinster
    Tg4 - connacht / ulster also
Rte/tg4 - munster (city channel south lol)

There was a time these matches where only available on tg4 and then for a time pay tv. Perhaps setanta should relocate to limerick.

Tg4 have 25 cluiche each year. Time for tg4 AS

Well it was a Leinster home game so your theory goes flying out the window.

Let me rephrase my theory (so that it is right haha)

    1. RTÉ generally have Leinster matches (BBC NI coverage for Ulster matches)
    2. BBC NI generally have Ulster matches (with coverage also on TG4, I would have assumed not when they are up against Munster/Leinster as they may be on RTÉ).
    3. TG4 generally have Connacht matches (with BBC NI covering Connacht V Ulster)
    4. As for Munster obviously available on BBC NI when playing Ulster (and TG4) which to me would mean that RTÉ would cover the other matches (bar Connacht).... which then means that TG4 may have more Leinster V Munster matches since RTÉ get the majority of other Leinster/Munster matches when not playing either Connacht and Ulster.

    OR

Perhaps TG4 pay more for the rights then RTÉ, but I am sure RTÉ and TG4 both broadcast the final.

Have you any evidence for that Elmo?

My recollection is that TG4 and RTE had very similar numbers of Leinster and Munster games last year.

Looking at the host broadcaster this year (my theory in brackets)

    Munster V Dragons TG4 (RTÉ)
    lEINSTER V Dragons RTÉ (RTÉ)
    Connacht V Scarlets TG4 (TG4)
    Munster V Scarlets TG4 (RTÉ)
    Leinster V Connacht TG4 (TG4)
    Munster V Ospreys RTÉ (RTÉ)
    Munster V Aironi TG4 (RTÉ)
    Connacht V Blues RTÉ (TG4)
    Leinster V Munster TG4 (TG4)
    Munster V Edinburgh TG4 (RTÉ)
    Leinster V Blues TG4 (RTÉ)
    Leinster V Munster RTÉ (RTÉ)
    Munster V Connacht TG4 (RTÉ)
    Connacht V Leinster TG4 (TG4)

Which leads me to beleive that TG4 are more involved in the League then RTÉ!

Ah Evidence overrate particulary here on boards :) however I will say that it make sense that RTÉ and TG4 would divide Leinster V Munster matches evenly which my theory could dictate.

To me it seemed that TG4 were definitely Connacht's host broadcaster, BBC NI Ulster's and RTÉ Leinster's. As for Munster I felt it they were split between RTÉ and TG4. (To me that would make sense)

To update, Scotland v Ireland is being shown on Setanta Ireland. Setanta appear to have always had their eye on the game - they had scheduled old Manchester United v Liverpool games all afternoon yesterday - although they are claiming that they only bought the rights at the last minute because no one else had bothered.

    http://www.setanta.com/ie/Articles/2011/08/05/Ireland-v-Scotland-on-Setanta/gnid-103222/

The pick-up will have come too late for most listings, so I'd imagine the majority of people will be watching the match on BBC Two NI.

You can also tune in BBC 2 Wales on yor sky box in other channels.

    · Press the "SERVICES" button (near the top of the remote).
    · Highlight option 4 ("SYSTEM SET-UP"), press "SELECT" and then highlight option 4 again ("ADD CHANNELS") and press "SELECT".
    · In the appropriate fields enter the information required (you move through the fields using the "UP ARROW" and "DOWN ARROW" keys).

    · In the FREQUENCY field enter 10.788

    · The next three fields are toggle fields, i.e. you use the "LEFT ARROW" and "RIGHT ARROW" keys to change the values.

    Toggle Polarisation - V
    Toggle Symbol Rate - 22000
    Toggle FEC - 5/6

    · Once you have entered all the required information, scroll down to "FIND CHANNEL" and press "SELECT" to scan for the channels and in a few moments it should pop up, along with other channels on the same frequency.

    · Use the "YELLOW" button to place a tick beside BBC 2 Wales when you've finished ticking press "SELECT". BBC 2 Wales will now be stored in your "OTHER CHANNELS" menu. (Press "SERVICES" then select "OTHER CHANNELS" at the bottom).

BTW RTÉ have 35 PRO12 matches 10 more then TG4. According to their Autumn Launch*

*up to 35 may mean that they may not show all 35.

Haven't got around to reading the Autumn schedule release yet. But there are only 24 gameweeks in the Pro 12, that would mean RTÉ covering more than one match some weekends. I'm struggling to remember times it happened last season, although I'm sure it did happen at least once.

Shame they are not showing more matches - rugby is a big event especially the WRC. suppose ill have to watch the other matches elsewhere. Does sky have the rights to all the world cup matches as well as setanta?

I'd say it is a certainty.
