Should I get my handicap now

    Right folks,

I am looking for advice. I joined a golf club at the start of the year having played pitch and putt up until then. My mebership expires the end of the year. Up until now I have just been going out playing the casual round of golf on my own early mid week or weekends. I don't know any of the other members of the club. My game has been progressing nicely in that I am getting more accurate with my drives and iron shots and good distance in them too. I was wjust wondering should I go and get a handicap now. How exactly does it work. Do I just notify the secretary of the club that I would like to be paired with a club member for a round (3 I believe) to mark and sign off my card or should I hold off until nearer to the expiry of my membership in December and get more practice in. If I don't decide to renew my membershp next year but get my handicap before then I presume that stays with me etc. Sorry abou the silly questions but Im a newbee to the sport. Pitch and Putt is a whole lot different:P

Welcome to the long game and good luck.

I think you should get into the club more and get your handicap as soon as you can if your serious about getting into it. Playing competitively will only improve game. It certainly did for me. The handicap stays with you while youre affiliated with a GUI golf club.

Get your name on the time sheet with some members and get those three cards in. It doesn't take too long at all and at least you'll know where your at coming into next year.

Best of luck and hope this helps somewhat.

This is probably a stupid question, but how do i actually get a handicap? Im new to the sport and looking to get my handicap, but i dont know how to go about it. Can i use any cards, or do they have to be from competitions? And what do I actually do with these cards? Do i type them into the computer, hand them into the clubhouse, or what?

    Cheers for any help.

You have to a member of a GUI affiliated golf club.

You need to get three cards in as your handicap assessment. These cards need to be signed by a member of the club.

Easiest thing to do is get your name down whenever you can on the time sheet with a member. It can be a competition round it doesn't matter. Once you have three cards complete contact the handicap secretary and let him know you're ready to go.

The rest is just sit and wait for that number that you will be obsessed with each and every day for the rest of your life!!

    Good luck and enjoy.
