    Hi all,

Am a long time lurker of boards and have only started posting so hopefully i have the right thread. Anyway am 25 and am just back from being in Australia for 2 years, worked at several jobs since i left school, mostly labouring and am thinking about starting an apprenticeship in painting or carpentry. Im just wondering that if i did manage to get an apprenticeship how likely is it that i'll have a job in 6 months? I dont want to start an apprenticeship and then get let go in a couple of months! Im half thinking of getting out of this country again for a while, dont know what to do really. any advice welcome!!

Its a hard one to answer - fact is that most apprenticeships are in the construction business which is dead and unlikely to revive in the near future.
There is every chance you could start only to find yourself out of a job before completing but on the other hand you may well be able to finish it.
Worth remembering that for now there is a major oversupply of construction trades in this country.

yeah whats putting me off aswell is that theres not a lot of of apprenticeships for each trade up on the usual websites. For example, if i went to do painting and got let go in 6 months, i could be waiting another 6 months to start working again. yeah its a hard one to answer alright and too be honest i dont think anyone know whens construction is going to pick up again.

No job is guaranteed these days. I had completed 2 years of a 4 year electricians apprenticeship and the company went out of business, found it very hard to try and find an employer willing to take me on then because my experience was factory based rather than being on sites.

When fas is switched to solas they are no longer going to run courses/apprenticeships that lead back into construction so the government know something we don't...So idbforgetbabout apprenticeship and look at a proper training course with real job prospects

Construction will take years to recover and even then it will not be like it was in the boom times.
A number of factors to consider if contemplating a career in construction -

1 ) There is a major ' overhang ' of unsold/unlet properties ( both domestic and commercial ) . Why build when there is a surplus of property ?

2 ) Most construction projects have a financial borrowings component , the banks simply are not lending now and are unlikley to lend for construction for some considerable time.

3 ) Traditionally the Government undertook a lot of construction projects like schools , roads , etc. This Capital spending has been cut back drastically and is likely to be cut further.

4 ) A few years ago FAS ( who we all love to hate ) warned that over 1/3 of male school leavers were going into apprenticeships and that when the boom ended the country would be awash with unemployed tradesmen.

Unless planning to emigrate , I think construction jobs are for the most part probably not the wisest choice.
Sorry to be downbeat but I see very little reason to think building will pick up anytime soon.

yeah i understand that construction wont be picking up for a few years but was hoping making to get trained in and then see what construction is like in a few years time. So what is going to happen when solas take over?? i know that will be keen to provide courses that relate to new industries where jobs can be created but will be there another department where apprentices can go to for training or will it just be 4 years straight with the contractor your working for?
