Tins of tuna, salmon and the like. 2/3 of whats in the tin is fecking brine or fecking oil so what do you do with it?

I Squeeze the f*ck out of it to get as much brine or oil as possible out of it so the fish itself is dry as a bone. After all I did buy a tin of fish and if I wanted oil I would have bought that instead.

But I have noticed when other people burst open a tin of tuna or what have you they only lightly drain off the fluid but then it doesn't taste as good I think.

    So what do you do?

How do you drain a tin of fish? 111 votes

I like tinned fish because i hate cooking.I do drain both brine and oil and i worry a little bit because i had to use Caustic soda to clear the outflow pipe yesterday and tinned fish oil seemed to be the only thing to blame.I will welcome any comments please and could somebody explain how they always manage such a neat job when canning sardines.I've been buying them for years and never saw a damaged one.Nothing on google. They are scarce now in lidls and aldis.

Brine and oil on fish is vile! I normally put it in a strainer and wash it with water, then squeeze out the water with a spoon.

There is such a thing as cans of "No Drain" tuna for sale in the major supermarkets now ya know;). Might be worth a try!

What do people do with the oil from the tins?
You cant really pour it down the sink because it clogs it up. And you can't really pour it into the bin either. Or you would have a very smelly leaking bin. So what do ye do?

That was an old body builders trick, esp coming up to a competition when he/she didn't want to take in more salts.

    Its what I still do.

I poor the oli/brine on a piece of bread and give it to my dogs. They love fish and all associated fish products.

Yep - it's a bad idea, and even if it doesn't clog your pipes, it can eventually clog the sewers.

Me, I only buy fish in oil when I know I can use the oil: most commonly I use it when stir-frying in a wok e.g. tuna with veg & noodles.

Save every drop in a big jar and give it to the cat on it's birthday.

Yes. My cat goes bananas for 364 day old fish brine.

I usually drain anchovies that are in oil. The oil they are packed in gets dirty and such, and briny. A recipe I use for a wonderful anchovie sauce calls for good olive oil, so I use that, even though the ****ers are packaged in olive oil. It does actually improve the taste.

In general though fish can brine is more or less useless. Tuna brine sucks for salads. The anchovie oil would be good but it's not what I use those guys for!

Great stuff for 'loosening up' your cat if the animal is a bit bound.

Our cat was struggling a bit, so we put him on a good clatter of fish oil drainings

and he was spattering out nice runny scutther in no time.

    Don't over do it though.

Buy it fresh and you won't have to drain anything!

I saw this tip in a magazine and thought who the feck would use that but now there's you and others like you on this thread.

Place a slice of bread under the can before opening to catch all the drips and then put the slice of bread in cat/dog bowl and drain the rest of the oil onto the bread. One happy animal with a shiny coat and no drain blockages. :D

ETA: because I know someone will say it - don't do it with brine, only with oil.

Jesus, I don't know how someone could eat the brine!! Gotta drain it well!

About a year ago we took the scenic route home from south Kerry, stopped in Michael Healy-Raes shop in Kilgarvin. We walked into the shop and Michael was making a sandwich on the counter. Slapped the bread down, cracked open the tin of tuna and plopped the lot on the bread, picked his nose, smacked the other bit of bread down on top and Voila, a MHR Tuna & Brine sandwich. The sick cnut. We were badly hungover and it was sick to watch, he really is the king of the red necks.

we don't buy it in oil, it's manky, but the brine ones get drained and the juice and a bit of the fish goes to the cats and they love it.

If I'm cooking something, I'll use the oil.

    If not, I drain it.
