Hi. I have Sky subscription Plus and Freeview.2 boxes in attic. The RF2 out on both boxes goes to a splitter and on to an amplifier beside the box. There are 4 outs all now used in 4 rooms. I have sky freeeviw/subscription on each tv. I have no rte on freeview I note on the most recent Bush TV i got in Argos it has saorview built in. The coaxiale input on this most recent tv is being used on it for the 2 channels there is no where to put the coaxiale cable that I would run from digital aerial on roof to this tv.Is there a handy way/device around this? If there anything I could buy that would solve this I would be interested. What price is a digital tv aerial please? Thank You

Attic is a bad place to have Sky boxes.

no such thing as a 'digital aerial'. but if you put a correctly grouped UHF aerial on the roof pointing at the correct transmitter and attained the correct signal levels, you could feed this into the aerial input on your sky box, thus distrubuting the signal through your system.

    Hi
I refer to digital and aerial. I have a satellite dish and as a result have the set up as described on post above . An aerial capable of recieving digital is required for Saorview. I am wondering what exactly is required to add to my present system to recieve the saorview on all my tvs , eg roof aerial to saorview box in attic located beside my 2 present digital boxes and what exact connections do i need from there to feed all my tvs....thks

MrSneeg has already explained the way you should do this. I and a lot of other Installers in the business have said numerous time before a confined place like an Attic is not the best place to put any sort of Satellite receiver. Your are paying Sky for digital but what you are receiving at your TV is a RF signal with mono sound.

You cant feed multiple TVs from a Saorview box and expect each TV to watch a different channel. A Saorview box is required at each TV.

Thats a great point you make. I see he also split the freeview(old sky box without card) with the sky plus box I got , he was like yourself an installer (sky registered) in the business , I understand this is not best practice either. It was part of a new deal with Sky. He did a lot of my friends TV too.I apprciated Mr Sneeg info , I was going to try this myself so seeking a bit more specific detail is all. A new TV came with saor view included in the tv..I only want one digital RTE box to put with others in attic so I can watch it on one tv at a time.

Is the Sky plus box in your Attic a HD box {black and silver} If so you should get it installed at your main TV and connected through HDMI to the TV and redistribute the rf2 signal from there instead of your Attic.

While talking aerials for Saorview - is there an "OK" rabbit ears arrangement that could work rather than fitting (and cableing) - I know proper aerial better but I live in an area that should be able to receive "OK" signal and I dont want the nightmare of having to run extra cables around the house which has just one set of cabling that feeds from the Sky aerial to the Sky boxes/TVs.

Really depends on how close you are to the transmitter and if there are any obstacles in the way . Rabbits ears work fine in strong signal areas and as digital is more robust than analogue you can sometimes get a perfect digital picture where only a snowy analogue picture can be obtained. Its really a case of trial and error

Was sort of hoping that someone on list might say or recommend a set - Such as Ive used the "XYZ model ABC" rabbit ears and they worked for me so could be worth a try.

I hear what you are saying but honestly theres little difference between them in my experience. Maybe a google might show up a model that stands out from the rest

The use of rabbit ears/set-top/internal aerial will depend on your location, nearest transmitter, signal strength, where it's located within your house etc. not the TV/STB it is attached to. It could work in your house but not your next door neighbour's or vice versa.

if you want to add a saorview receiver in the attic you will need one of these http://www.tvtrade.ie/triax-trilink-kit.html to modulate and control it via your IR eyes, you will also need to loop the UHF aerial thru the saorsat box and into the aerial input of one of your sky boxes this will send the aerial signal down your exsisting cables to your saorsat enabled TV,
if in doubt contact your local installer for help.

a sky box without a card is an approximation to freesat (also known as FTA satellite), and all the channels there are available in a box that has a paid sub card plugged in, just rearranged to a uk epg. so I do not know why you need two sky boxes one with and one without a sub card.

freeview is the uk version of Saorview.
Saorview can be received on any terrestrial aerial that can receive analogue RTE.

I am not sure if there is a Saorview box that can be controlled from a 'sky eye'*.

*clearly I am wrong from the previous post.

not hd box. i was just hoping i could add the digital box in attic to complement the set up that was done by tv installer.i hoped to be able to watch saorview on any of the tvs as i can with the sky subscription and the freeview.

. . . an approximation to freesat (also known as FTA satellite)

Freesat (capital F) is a proprietry EPG & interactive add-on to free-to-air sat. & is only available on branded boxes, not generic FTA receivers.

Saorview can be received on any terrestrial aerial that can receive analogue RTE.
Only UHF aerials, a lot of analogue RTE is VHF.

Also the use of 2 boxes gives a choice of channel on the remote tvs.

and over 100 existing analogue transmitters will not be upgraded for Saorview DTT requiring some viewers to realign their existing aerial to a different transmitter and may also have to replace that aerial. Others will have to upgrade to a Saorsat dish and receiver for the Irish channels.

    .

Not down this way it can't.

At Present the Analouge channels from Mt leinster are combined RTE1+RTE2 are VHF. TV3 and TG4 +UHF.
Saorview from Mt Leinster is GroupB/Wideband. So unlike what the Experts said in the local news paper articles recently, People will have to get their Aerials checked out or replaced by a Recognised Installer.

What will happen when analogue switched off next year.
Will a dish be required to keep saorview reception?

If you have Saorview reception already then you won't need a dish to 'keep' it.

Thanks but thought that analogue signal i'm using is to be turned off next year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 49 Mexecutioner

In that case you won't be 'keeping' Saorview reception as you don't know if you have it or not.

Have you checked the coverage map?

Thanks but thought that analogue signal i'm using is to be turned off next year.

Analogue switchoff (ASO) is happening next year, probably Oct 2012.

Analogue terrestrial and digital terrestrial (Saorview) are both received using an aerial, no dish required.

Some households using an aerial will have to realign their aerial to another transmitter and may have to upgrade their aerial as many of the existing analogue transmitters will not be upgraded for Saorview.

Approx 2% of the population will have to invest in a satellite dish for the new Saorsat satellite service from RTÉ as they will not be covered by a terrestrial transmitter.

Where approx are you located? Do you receive analogue TV3 thru your aerial?
